It is what it is. Someone starts up www.paisleyparkgirl.org let's see how you hold out.

I feel the org has always had the most uh, "Prince"-like of personalities, too, wonder if that played a role or if he were still here he'd be more into Twitter / reddit / LSA etc.

This is sad. I mean, we've known for a very long time that Prince was on the Org. But hearing it again, confirmed by his chef (or whatever), I find it sad. Reading what your fans (especially Prince fans) have to say about you must have been hard. And I say this as someone who've been in forums, etc. since 1993. Prince fans have generally (as a group) not been... nice. At least online. And this is still the case in 2024, for whatever reasons.

Anyway, having watched the video, this confirms the feeling that this is really a documentary for the general audience. It's a mainstream documentary. Prince had a lot of insecurities. His parents divorced. He did that... thing with James Brown and Michael Jackson and decided that it would never happen again. He was abusive to people around him. Yada yada. And then he did that R&R Hall of Fame solo to show everyone he was the boss.

Okay.

Would I still watch it? Sure. It contains previously unreleased material, so sure.

But I'm not sure I'm that interested in reading "psychotherapy notes" about an artist I love. I've known from the beginning he was someone I wouldn't have liked to meet.

That's such an interesting perspective, and probably one I share. I have to admit like many people here I have always imagined what it would be like to meet Prince. We have all heard the stories the good the bad the complicated et cetera. The question is, how would you feel if you had met him and he turned out to be a prick?

I remember listening to Kevin Smith's story about Prince and the documentary, and it sounds like Prince was initially nice, became complicated, and then became a prick. That is the experience of many.

I sure wouldn't have wanted such an experience to ruin my listening of Prince. I have enjoyed many many many hours of amazing music jams et cetera.

That being said, I really would like to see this documentary. I am of the mind that truth is always better being free.

Am I nieve for thinking we still might get to see it???

Spunky

I was prepared to give this documentary the benefit of the doubt, but after seeing this commentary, I have no interest in viewing it. Why does the discussion focus on negativity if the documentary, as the reviewers have stated, presents a balanced review? The estate team is also at fault. Their handling of the estate so far has left many feeling disappointed, and I feel that is spilling into some fans' feelings about the documentary.

Let's promote a product that is never going to be released. Sound familiar? Like is 1994 or even 1987.

Maybe they're trying to artifically create some kind of movement? They're barking up the wrong tree if they're looking for any semblance of unity in the Prince community.

All that's clear is this superficial pop doc has had more promotion than any of his albums bar none since the friggin' Batman OST.

According to people who knew him at the time, Sister was based on things that actually happened to him. There was a throwaway mention about plastic surgery. Those are two things mentioned briefly. They compare the arc of it to a sports documentary a few times (Pablo Torre is a sports writer). For me the key takeaway was that these guys, who hadn't really considered Prince's music before said that after seeing the documentary they're obsessed. I've read the not so kind biographies of Prince and can confirm that knowing he was complicated, sometimes terrible, sometimes wonderful in his personal life never stopped me from appreciating his exceptional ability to make great music and put on a great show. So yeah. I think there's a huge opportunity here to increase interest in Prince, but the estate would have to be OK with presenting him as a complex individual.

One way or another, we will end up seeing that documentary. All of this, and it is sad that it comes this way, will cause more people to see it when the time comes. The news, the fact, is already mainstream.

On the other hand, I don't know if it has occurred to anyone that among all the maelstrom of tapes in the vault, some of them could be extremely private... and explicit?

from the nyt article:

“ But it soon became clear that there was almost nothing that was spontaneous or personal in the vault, almost no footage of him recording or writing. At one point, they were excited to discover a few home movies of Prince horsing around with girlfriends, but when they watched the tapes, they appeared to have been deliberately damaged.”

Then, next question may will be if it was Prince himself or anyone else at some moment who deliberately damaged that footage. Anyway, I don't have any curiosity about, but I really thought maybe was a key to understand this documess..

That's why it seems like some contrived attempt at a some kind of viral marketing campaign to me.

Like I feel like they're angling it so Prince fans make some sort of Twitter movement like when Zack Schneider's cult whined all over the internet for the director's cut of one of his crappy movies so Warna-Brotha eventually caved and produced a full-scale version.

Only they didn't really cave, they actively courted the viral marketing because they needed content during the pandemic.

Anyway, Prince fans aren't going to rally together, so I feel like right now in the story is where the powerz-th4t-b3 want us to be demanding the doc all over the internet. That isn't going to happen, so maybe they'll just skip to the next step and either leak it and then officially release it or just officially release it randomly.

Again, this lame doc's promotional onslaught is only second in the Prince canon to 'Purple Rain' at this point.

Publicists are clearly working over time on this nonsense on some entity's behalf. Nobody wants to discuss this, instead it's like "I for ONE would LIKE to SEE doc and make up opinion for myself!", like the most generic borderline A.I.-generated by-the-numbers reactions humanly possible.

Actually this particular thread was very good. Prince was talented as we all know but he wasn't the best businessman. There are a lot of songs that he should have picked out as singles and would have done extremely well but he didn't.

It's obvious that the best single choices were made when Prince was with Warner Bros.
