When 2 R In Love: The Ballads Of Prince (1991) Princevault has made an interesting update to the page about this unreleased compilation:  for the previous seven years). In the press conference, Prince mentioned that he had worked on this album recently, but that Warner Bros. did not return his call asking to license the songs for his use.However the idea of this album was already a decade older. A ballad compilation Simply titled: Prince: When 2 R In Love was already put together in December 1991. In June 2000, it was listed as an option for visitors at Prince: A Celebration to vote on for Prince's next album (along with Crystal Ball Volume II, Madrid 2 Chicago, Roadhouse Garden, an unnamed live album, an unnamed rock guitar album, an unnamed album of cover versions and an undetermined new studio album). The 1991 compilation had eleven tracks, a little over an hour in total, with a unique appearance of the full 8:01 version of Insatiable as penultimate track, while the other ten tracks were their previously released versions. It is possible the track list had changed to include any ballads recorded since 1991, when Prince announced working on the project in late 2000. It is not known, but possible that Prince planned to, or had, re-recorded the material when working on it in late 2000. Given his relationship with Warner Bros. at the time, it seems likely the album would include re-recorded versions (similar to A Celebration, announced the following year). However it is unknown if any tracks were re-recorded at the time. It’s also possible any tracks would have been recorded only if Prince decided to pursue this project further. The 2000 incarnation of album did not receive many votes by visitors at Prince: A Celebration, however, and was ultimately abandoned.

What a strange project!
It's intriguing to figure out what could have been the mindset behind it back in 1991. Perhaps in order to boost the back catalogue at the expense of the sugar-coated Diamonds And Pearls? Or a first attempt to fulfill contractual obligations with WB? |

What a strange name : When 2 R In Love is a terrible. We will never know what he had in mind to make the cut on 3 released project ( TBA, Lovesexy, Scandalous Sex Suite) and now that compilation. Every other track taken separately is great, but that must be a terrible and boring experience to listen to all of them in a row! Commercially, that would have been a flop. And no Diamonds and Pearls? Very strange and useless project. |

It si known WB considered releasing a greatest hits package in 1991. Maybe there would have been a 2CD set of hits and this. Given how many R&B albums from the late 80s and early 90s were made solely of ballads, there was obviously an audience for this in the US (I suspect mostly African-American women). I like the track list, and I think it would have been a lovely listening experience. It kind of reminds me of Madonna's Something To Remember project, which I also enjoyed. |

Thinking again on the original time frame of late 1991, I'm inclined to think this had to be a contractual release or a move towards WB (wasn't the following year when he signed the infamous contract with WB that marked the rest of the decade?).
Back in late 1991 he was on a creative roll, with a new band and about to embark on a world tour. It's hard to figure out Prince releasing a compilation of previously released stuff when he was actually scratching to release more new material.
The mindset in the year 2000 when he considered again the project was a very different one. Maybe he just threw in this collection into that list of 7 or 8 projects proposed at the Celebration for the sake of it and enlarge the list to overwhelming impact. |

The compilation being...well compiled in December 1991, doesn't mean that was supposed to be released that same month. In the contrary, that means it would have been released after the promotion of D&P somewhere in 1992. |

Until a couple of days ago or so, I used to do a daily check of changes and new pages. Now I’ll not bother. Another thing contributing to a waning interest. I'm not sure a random collection of 'screamy boner songs' is a great idea for an album personally. There's a reason they're spread out over various albums. Great songs... But together? No thanks blah blah blah |

On Mayte's subscriber's Instagram Story, she shared a picture of a CD cover handwritten by Prince that says "When 2 R In Love 12 Slow Jams," then Mayte's name and a couple of the early symbols.
No clue what that 12th song could be, or if this would be considered an "official" tracklist, since it's a handwritten CD to Mayte. Screaming. Panting. Making Noise. |

I put together a playlist of all these songs. Ladies and gentlemen it's according to the Estate and the tracklist; almost complete. It's just the the exception of an (un)official Insatiable. |

I remember well, in 1991, a record store offered me a greatest hits CD, a promotional copy. It didn’t have artwork, just black and white text. I regret I didn’t buy it. I wasn’t interested in it. Although, I believe it was a genuine official promotional copy… Not a bootleg. Wish I could find this back. I believe there was a crown printed on the cover. But not sure about that anymore. There was a 2-disc MJ compilation, supposed to be released in 1989 or 1990, that became ultimately Dangerous. It was called" Decade" and the tracklist was his greatest hits ( including the Jackson tracks) from 1979 to 1989. They could have done the same concept for Prince circa 1990w from I Wanna Be Your Lover to Partyman, with a bonus disc of corresponding b-sides. |
