This new 3CD digipack is the most comprehensive compilation to date of Prince’s songs as recorded by other Among the 52 tracks are many written and produced specifically for other acts, plus hit cover versions and obscure homages to the songwriting genius.
Featuring major pop hits penned for The Bangles, Sheena Easton, Martika and more, plus R&B smashes for Nona Hendryx, André Cymone and Meli’sa Morgan, as well as lesser- known latter-day collaborations with Shelby J, Ana Moura and Van Gogh.

Too much of a mixed bag, but I reckon they went rather far with licensing all those tracks. Some really interesting bits and pieces, especially the tracks available for the first time on CD. I guess I'd do without discs #2 and #3 ... Or at least condense the best out of it on a single disc and make it a double set. But oh well, as @Ramzoo said, better than nothing!

Yes, I was amazed the only Prince release this year went unnoticed.
I love the Robyn rendition of Jack U off.

it says Shelby J feat Anthony Hamilton – North Carolina † is marked as first time on CD, is this a different version than the one already released in 2012 on CD??

I don't know what to think of this. The first CD contains songs that Prince gave to other people, but it is very far from being comprehensive. Two of them are remixes that have nothing to do with Prince. The rest consists of random covers.

The only interesting thing might be a different version of "North Carolina", as Joris noted, if it is indeed a different version.

I guess I just don't see the point of a compilation in 2024. There's a thing called "playlists".

I imagine the compilers weren't aware of there being a CD single of that track.

Would have been great to see Battle Tapes' cover of "Dirty Mind" on this compilation.

Proabbaly yes. Would be nice if they added all tracks he gave to others instead of 2 discs full of covers. not worth the money to spend on

The Dirty Monroes "Vibrator" version is so fantastic!

As if Susan Moonsie is singing it.

Super fine cover, maybe even better than the unreleased original.

It has that phat eighties sound all over, including the dirty funky Linn Drums.

I have it on repeat.

-

Also like the bubble-gum version of 7 Hurtz ft Peaches & Bitch Lap Lap's "Sexy Dancer."

It's great they sampled Prince, and their story is more fun than the original Prince lyrics.

They sound a bit like Salt & Pepa when they rap, but with a level of Apollonia 6 bed-talks.

Cherry Red are one of the best reissue/catalogue labels around today. The care and attention they put into their compilations is exceptional.

I got the Sheena Easton Singles release from the RSD 2022 and the 40th years anniversary " A Private Heaven" from them (Both on Vinyl): I was very satisfied.

Which is really strange because this is an unauthorized "first release" of the song (as opposed to a cover) and while I can believe an obscure 7'' by an obscure band could get away with it 21 years ago, I find it odd that Cherry Red would go with it. I guess their lawyers told them y'all can get away with it because y'all aren't the onew ho put it out first, but still... Mr MakeMillions may not like this lol

.

Another funny thing is they ripped both the concept and title from this 1998 compilation by Connoisseur: https://www.discogs.com/r...e-Songbook

Just thought that if the people managing Prince releases had any sense they should release an album of Prince doing live covers of other artists, e.g. Whole of the Moon, Best of You, and of course A Case of You, to name but three obvious ones. Any other ideas?
There may or may not be something coming!

I look forward to this - was actually favourably reviewed in UK mag Echoes.

Should have comprehensive liner notes. I actually look forward to the soul versions of some of his songs...
