i would say that his 3121 album and that one before didn't make all that much money...

So Prince gets most of his $$ by touring, while having many employees on the payroll?

Most of that story has been told a-plenty.

I don't know why people think Prince runs out of money album to album. He got advances, bonuses, and we know that ticket sales profits an artist way more than album sales. Purple Rain bought him the Galpin house, so he was clearly doing well, and continued to do well.

The man was always a millionaire. I don't know why a mere $95K/mo seems like a miracle that he could pay it. It just shows how much fans (all of us) don't know his finances, despite how many articles the St. Paul Pioneer Press or Minneapolis Tribute, or whatever magazine publishes about such things. I mean, how many of us knew the properties he owned, or that he had gold bars stored away???

But again, why do we think Prince can't afford $1.14M a year in rent for something? Do we believe that Purple Rain is the only check he got and that all that money is gone? That he didn't make money when Paisley Park was open as a legit business? That he didn't have money to pay band members and staff? That other advances, record sales, bonuses, and touring didn't keep money in his pockets? Not to mention ongoing sales of his records, licensing royalities, etc?

Sure it's steep to us. To him, he knew what he could do. $95K/mo isn't "mere," and is certainly more than Boozer would've gotten renting it out otherwise (possibly). I guess Prince just really wanted that house for a while.

Absolutely. He still had folks making his clothes and shoes! He was actually smart with money the older he got, investing in land and properties, buying gold bars, etc.

Box office for the Musicology tour was over $87m. A big chunk of that would have gone to him. Merchandising on that would have made a pretty penny. And whenever he did a distribution deal, he got good advances.

Add some private performances to billionaires and he some significant income streams.

Artists always make the bulk of their money from concerts, not record sales. At least not in this millennium. He probably did net a good amount from Musicology Tour after everyone else was paid.

The man was rich. He earned that shit.
