How old are we?

Watching Purple Rain again actually got me feeling a little morose, it's so distinctly of it's time, like a time capsule and set me thinking of how long ago Prince's Purple Glory Days were. Which always sets me wondering about his fanbase getting older. You'd think the Estate would be cognisant of that and keen on getting stuff out before we all shuffle off into senile deaf old age.

So anyway, thought I'd start a thread and canvas fellow forum members. I'm 58, and getting nervy about being around for all the SDEs we dream of; how about you?

Yes, getting old my interest for Prince had changed. To be honest, I have only interest in vault music. The SDE photo books with Prince looking at the camera with sexy eyes, today, makes me sad.

Music, music, free the music.

Fan since hearing "Controversy" on the radio. Ryde or die since Parade and watching (wearing out my VHS) of the Detroit Birthday Show. Fell off a bit around Rainbow Children. Still a massive love for the man and think about him at least once a day. Fingers crossed for any unseen live footage from the vault but kinda doubtful at this point.

Agreed. It should be about the music.
SDEs should be produced with far more emphasis on content (music, music and more music on CDs and BluRays, and then some essays and photos of P working and photos of original tape boxes) and a lot less on fancy packaging (tons of vinyl and pointless, repetitive promo shots of Prince posing). And what's the point of making the booklet hardbound, when it comes inside a rigid box anyway? Just to add shipping weight and cost?
.
I'm 55, btw.

I also agree. My interest is solely in Prince's music. I don't care about his personal relationships, religous views, politics, fashion, etc.

Admittedly, to a degree, each of those areas might have informed some of his artisitc choices. And admittledly, some people in the public are interested in those topics. With that mind, I'm willing to tolerate some non-music essays and other artefacts in the SDE collections. But I believe the focus should be on the music itself.

I'd love if each SDE came with liner notes that gave a detailed recording history of each song. If thsoe notes were to include some trivia on personal/social issues that influences the lyrics, great. In that context -- and famed as supplemental info, rather than the focus -- the information would be weclome (so long as it's relaying Prince's true feelings, and not speculating or projecting the opinions of the author onto Prince).

The liner notes should also include explanations for any posthumous editorial decisions made in preparing the track for the SDE. I recognize that the Estate will sometimes need to make tough choices. A tape may be damaged requiring an edit or recreation. Multiple mixes of a song may be in the vault with no clear indication of which Prince perferred, requiringt the Estate to make a judgement call on which version to include. Etc. If the Estate provided that information in the liner notes, it would blunt a lot of the criticism they endure. Fans want that info not only for the transparency, but also because it's interesting.

EDIT: Iā€™m 54.

Old enough to probably be dead by the time the Prince Estate gets it sh*t together (47).

37. Will probably be in *at least* my fifties by the time this Estate is doing anything interesting with the Come/Gold Experience eras, lol. (and doubtful that they'll still be putting out anything new in the SDE format by then)

Aware of Prince from about as early as possible in Australia due to late night video shows and Double J radio after midnight. Fan since Dirty Mind.

Here's the deal: We fans age, but Prince will stay forever young. That's how it is with musicians. Look at Elvis...that movie came out and a new generation of fans were born. Prince, like Hendrix, The Beatles, etc will always be a global brand (for better or worse). I think the estate gets a bad rap, but they certainly could be maximizing Prince's image/brand/music more than they are. I think once this legal stuff with the family gets wrapped up...we will se exactly that.

I'm 56. Fan since probably 1980 I guess, when I found "I Wanna Be Your Lover" on a K-Tel record, Soundwaves, which I still have a copy of - two actually. The cassette had a slightly different order of songs, and the Canadian verison was 80% different.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

48. Started listening when my mom bought the 1999 cassette. She then bought the Purple Rain cassette in '84 & 9 year old me stole the tape & played it so much in my Fischer Price tape player, the ink wore off so you couldn't see the song titles. Since then, every release date, I'd be first in line at the wrecka stow to pick up a cassette/CD. I even went to midnite releases to buy Gold Experience & the Black Album.

I listened to Prince until Parade, then there was so much other good music out that I kinda forgot about him until the Batman soundtrack. Listened to him again until Rave. I bought all the CDs after that, but never really listened to them deeply. I also have bought every release since his passing. After he passed, I added all of his CDs (& the NPG online albums) to my ipod & caught up. I've been working from home since Covid, so I'll throw some Price on. I think I've been listening to him alot more in the past few years than I ever have.

P.S. I also own & listen to alot of the associated artist albums (The Time, Shelia E., The Family, NPG, etc.).

P.P.S. My family took a vacation to the Mall Of America, so we stopped to see Paisley Park & First Ave. Didn't get to go in, but I have photos. I think it was around the time Emancipation was released.

I'll be 25 in two months. Sarted listening at the age of 5, my mother had the Hits 1 & 2 compilation, with Purple Rain. When I got my own laptop in 2013 I downloaded the whole discography and became a serious fan.

59. Been a fan since 1979. I already bought "For You" and liked it but not that much. "Prince" then got me hooked. Then "Dirty Mind" hit us and it just continued from there.
