what is the best version of purple rain you have heard? for me its prob the nearly 20 min version on a bootleg of atlanta 1985. the sound isnt as good as syracuse but theres more feeling in it i think, though ive never heard a recording of one of the earlier shows on this tour, so maybe theres a better version, idk. the early first avenue version i like, but im not into that extra verse. ive actually lost the cd, and it might be that any version of the song from that tour is the best, just cos i think it needs, deserves, and is just better a) live without the studio production which always sounds a bit too 'closed' (ie not enough reverb/space) to me b) because it has that extended guitar section at the start which i could listen to forever. purple rain doesnt work really when its rushed, which is what he often seemed to do later i think.

For me (without any doubt), it's the Syracuse and (last) Yokohama 86' concerts. 💜🤟🤠 "Money won't buy U happiness but it'll pay 4 the search."

I generally haven't really cared for any version of it outside of First Avenue 1983/album version. I feel like because it became so anthemic and iconic, it was overdone and overly dramatic with each performance. It was the one song that people, who paid their good money to see him in concert, would be the most disappointed if he didn't play, and he hammed it up for them everytime. I feel like the '83/album version is the song in it's purest form without all the extra theatrics of the performances that came after it. Something raw and emotional was captured that night and it couldn't be repeated.

I was able to see the Revolution's 2nd show last week at First Avenue. Seeing them play this song in that venue for the first time ever would've been insane.
