The D&P ATMOS mix was interesting. I found it to be too much of artistic statement. The mix is part of the art. He chose to bury those amazing guitar stuff at the end of WDC...I just can't see how he'd b ok with anything that exposed his music like some of the ATMOS remixes do.

I'lll buy it all....but I do wonder if this is ok.

I really been enjoying it. It's a lot more 'rock'. I didn't think The Beautiful Ones or Darlin Nikki really benefitted, but the others were really interesting.

If anyone here is on Apple Music... am I right in saying they've removed the original version of the album now? I can't see it anywhere, just this awful Atmos mix which sounds like a bad cover version in a supermarket or something.

You need to set the 'Dolby Atmos' setting within your MUSIC app to "Off" (the other two options are "Automatic" and "Always On") if you want to hear the stereo mix.
.
The Atmos mix will of course sound awful without the proper equipment.

Thanks. I am set up for surround but I hate the new mixes.

Which streaming services are currenlty carrying the Atmos Mix?

Apple Music and Tidal, that I know of (and the volume differences between tracks on the Tidal version are absolutely HORRIBLE!)

I'm so confused, because I can't find the Atmos mix of purple rain on Tidal anywhere. I assumed it wasn't on there. Still haven't been able to hear the Diamonds and Pearls one either.

How am I not seeing those if they're supposedly on there?

Why does Chris James insist on burying so much stuff that was prominent in the original mixes so deep in his Atmos mixes? Steven Wilson's ethos is to re-create the original stereo mix as closely as possible before opening up that new mix into Atmos, and I feel like that approach is sensible when i) mixing a classic, and ii) mixing without the input of the original artist.

David Kosten's Atmos mix of Tubular Bells is incredible, and his Atmos mix of Paul Young's first album is one of the best things I've ever heard - "Sex" is my go-to demo track for my Atmos setup. I so wish the Estate would recognise how respectfully and professionally someone like Kosten would approach the material, and ditch this guy before they let him loose on anything else.

I like it but just accept that it's a radically different mix for most tracks.

I liked it once I ended up accepting that it's a radically different mix.

I think I could do the same if it wasn't also significantly worse. I'm not against different at all, but this just sounds like it's been run through bad AI mixing software, like he isn't even familiar with the original material. He did the same with Fleetwood Mac's Rumours recently - a significantly worse version than the surround mix from 20 years ago.

So.

The original 1984 release is still the best?

I think it's a taste and setup thing.
I have a pretty high end setup and the Atmos mix is different but I'd rather listen to that that Prince/Joshua Welton brickwall release. The original vinyl sounds great but I prefer this new Atmos mix (proabbly because it's just sounds new and fresh and in any other non-Atmos setup at home i'll just spin the original viny release)
I thikn it's cool we have multiple options when buying this album.

Well, I'm talking about an Atmos mix being listened to on an Atmos setup - apples and oranges. The original 1984 release is the best stereo mix, and it's the best mastering of that mix. A 2024 Atmos mix could have been a great alternative that sits alongside the original mix. It wouldn't have needed to better the original mix to be great or to be enjoyable, but it probably would have needed to have been created by a more accomplished mixing engineer than Mr. James.

This is kind of a similar situation to when Prince hired Welton to remaster the original mix - he was Prince's guy... The estate have gone for James whenever they've needed something mixing into surround because he's worked with Prince before. I'd prefer they went with the best person for the job.

Hmmm, I wonder how Hans-Martin Buff would've done the ATMOS mixes if he had a chance. I know he mixed the latest Peter Gabriel album in Dolby Atmos. And I liked his mixes on the Crystal Ball set.

Hey folks,

If I'm wanting to listen to the Atmos mix through Apple Music, do I have to be a subscriber to the streaming service or can I purchase it from the iTunes Store?

Thanks!
