"#Prince fans! The #PurpleRain Deluxe Expanded Edition is no longer the best sounding version.
Today the @Prince Estate released Purple Rain in Dolby ATMOS!"

This is cool and I look forward to listening, but… Deluxe Expanded Edition was never the best sounding version of that album, sorry.

It's an interesting mix (and very different), but in no way better than the original.

It's different, indeeed. I like it. It certainly doesn't replace the original stereo mix, just like for D&P.

I don't know, I like it better than the original hearing it through my Atmos set.

Some initial thoughts on the Purple Rain Atmos mix:

Let's Go Crazy - The vocal effects in the beginning speech are subdued. The instruments are very separated, but the bass and guitar in the centre are quiet, which really takes away the punch of the song, compared to the original. The Rev's background vocals are also very quiet in the overall mix.

Take Me With U - It's essentially a "solo Prince mix". Apple's vocal is buried, which I'm sure will make a lot of fans very happy. The guitars lack the punch they had on the original mix.

The Beautiful Ones - Overall, an unimpressive mix. Prince's vocals are quiet and the drums are too dominant. It would have been nice to hear more of the piano and synth strings.

Computer Blue - It is what it is. It's not terrible, but certainly doesn't "wow" me.

Darlin Nikki - The original mix was great - it had an amazing ambience to it that this Atmos mix doesn't.

When Doves Cry - This is different to the Atmos mix that was previously created and is a million miles better. Still, not great, but one of the better mixes on this version.

I Would Die 4 U - Except for the background vocals and the cymbals, for most of the song, it essentially sounds mono with a bit of reverb.

Baby I'm a Star - Holy kick drum, Batman! I don't know how to describe it exactly, but it's missing the live feel that the original mix had.

Purple Rain is probably the better of all the tracks, but the audience noise is practically muted throughout (the "Aow!" on the bridge is gone.) It's nice to hear his solo in greater detail.

Overall, they should have tried to replicate the original mix, and then mapped it to Atmos. The original has a perfect soundscape that I wish was replicated here. I've been a big advocate for Chris James' mixing (especially after the various dumpster firers of Niko Bolas), but this has made me step back a bit. It's not bad, but the album had so much potential to be better represented in Atmos.

Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of James' Atmos mixes. I prefer my classic album Atmos mixes to "expand" the original mix, not change it in ways I find unnecessary. I wasn't a fan of the D & P mix either. Maybe one day the estate will contact Steven Wilson... but I doubt it.

Ok, the missing "Aow!" in "Purple Rain" (see bluegangsta's notes) is bothering me. Somehow I always assumed it was coming from a musician, not from the audience?

"Here’s a quote from Paisley Park Enterprises: “As we begin what will be a year-long celebration of the 40th anniversary of Purple Rain, we are thrilled to present Prince’s masterpiece in ATMOS, providing an immersive, surround auditory experience of Prince’s legendary album. This highly crafted release will present Prince’s iconic work with more space and depth while preserving the beautiful songs that have shaped music and popular culture, and touched the lives of countless fans around the world”.

The good news is a Blu-ray Audio has been confirmed, “to be released later in 2024”. Obviously, we’ll make that available via the SDE shop so ensure you’re signed up to the SDE Newsletter mailing list (see below) or are an SDE Member to be one of the first to hear about this physical release!"

So... do we wanna take bets on whether or not this Atmos Blu-Ray will end up being the "big release" of the year in place of an actual SDE? neutral

Apple Music and Tidal, that I know of (and the volume differences between tracks on the Tidal version are absolutely HORRIBLE!)

I'm once again reminded that ATMOS and Airpods (on Apple Music) don't play well together. It really sounds like shite. Take off Apple's "Spatial" feature, though, and it's a pleasant mix.

I’m about halfway through the Atmos Mix right now and am pretty shocked. This is one of the more revisionist atmos mixes I’ve ever heard. The album has a smoother, more fluid sound, but the rock muscle has been sucked out. Totally different and not better, but definitely fascinating. You can hear Prince’s voice much more clearly, certain instruments jump out, but the stadium sized “crunch” of the original mix has been lost.

Listening on my AirPods Pro. I really like this. It doesn’t replace the epic punch of the original mix, but I’m loving hearing some of the vocals and instruments so clearly for the first time. It’s different in a good way, but I just take it as a cool interpretation of the original.

Isnt an atmos mix designed to be played on a purpose designed speaker setup,
? I.e. NOT earbuds!

Anyway i dont care about these mixes. Give me an sde instead please.

This is hardly exciting news in my book, just a release for ppl with high end systems and a way to get ppl to pay for an old album again.

Funny that the Warner Bros 4K release of Purple Rain didn’t have an Atmos mix because the Estate weren’t interested… but then suddenly they release at Atmos mix of the album.
It’s like they realised too late that they needed to do SOMETHING! 😃

On Huey Morgan’s BBC 6 Music show today, he had a 30 minute slot:

“The Purple Rain block party”, BobaFatt with another incredible mix, this time celebrating the Purple one at his most purple as Purple Rain turns 40.

Listen to on BBC Sounds (if you can get the app) or Possibly with this link (unless geo locked or whatever it is):

https://www.bbc.co.uk/pro...s/m002095k
There may or may not be something coming!
