Celebration 2024 (PART III)

The previous sticky thread ( https://prince.org/msg/7/470796 ) seems to be locked out, so posting here.

I had GA tix.

I skipped the W party on Thursday. Friday started with footage from the Purple Rain tour at Landover, MD on 11/20/84. They stopped the fooage after Darling Nikki. There was a talk with Billy Sparks and then they showed Purple Rain in HD. Panel discussion with The Revolution, then the concert at First Avenue. I normally like Judith Hill, but she didn't fit well on some of the songs.

Saturday started of with footage of a reheasal from Reno on the Musicoloy tour. It was short, only about 30 minutes played. Morris Day was interviewd by local news guy. They had to bring out about 4 different microphones to get 2 that worked. Don't they check this stuff ahead of time? Morris mentioned he would be backed by the NPG and not the touring version of The Time. He didn't seem to like that fact. A couple of funny stories about grocery shopping and being in a hotel waiting for a woman to show up (more on that later). Morris said Prince always had his number and that he never had Prince's. That stuck out to me. Panel discussion for the Broadway show. Long break and then Morris and NPG show.

I skipped today too. Local bands outside at Paisley Park.

Wow, sounds like a letdown of an event. What should have been an easy slam dunk for the estate was instead another anticlimactic stumble and fall. Not at all surprising, though.

so...

that's it...

so far...

for this BIG YEAR

-

and then this :

https://www.billboard.com/music/rock/purple-rain-musical-prince-preview-1235715963/

-

for those who are interested :

“...Jacobs-Jenkins, who assured the audience of diehards that his book will draw on the 1984 film’s screenplay without radically reworking it... he intends to further develop the character of Apollonia and make some necessary pacing changes to fit a stage production...”

-

and this :

"...the soundtrack’s nine songs are not enough material for a Broadway musical, they also revealed that the Purple Rain stage musical will draw on Prince’s full catalog, including songs that didn’t even appear in the film..."

-

and also this:

"...Rachel Webb returned to the stage with two others to perform “The Glamorous Life” as Vanity 6. ... a Prince-penned song ... came out in 1984 ... it’s not a Vanity 6 number at all, but rather a hit performed by Sheila E...

As long as the songs are a sonic and thematic match for the realm of Purple Rain, who cares whether a tune appeared in the film?..."

oh wait so now the musical is another excuse to not release new music? damn.

if anything the musical and the 40th anniv. would be a reason to release a PR SDE.

it baffles me beyond belief that during the celebration no one talked about new
and future releases or announced anything.

what the heck? eek

Imagine this; they release the music of the PR musical as an album for Chritmas.

Mind my words...

Shutupalreadydamn!

Indeed, why don't they release two new songs, like they did last year?

If I remember correctly, those two tracks didn't come out until a whole month after Celebration last year. But I wouldn't be surprised if they don't release any Celebration tracks this year because the Atmos Purple Rain is "enough" in their eyes. And also just to withhold from the fans because they're pissy about being criticized online lol

Those in charge don't come here.

Here they can't find enough fools who'll pay $ 1350, or even $ 750...

about that PR musical preview show;

(as) Vanity 6 performing The Glamorous life...

Vanity? What about Apollonia (in the musical I mean)?

Confusion.

At this point we can only hope one of us in here or someone out in the world who is actually a fan of the music makes billions of dollars and can just purchase the rights to the music at some point, and of course release it as it should have already been released.

You have numerous professionally shot and/or high quality videos of concerts, reheresals with some of the funkiest renditions of songs (e.g. Shockadelica, Star Fish & Coffee, etc...), all the SDE shit for folks who care, the numerous unfinished albums, remixes, etc...

And instead this dumb lot of shitheads give us what, a dumbass woke musical? They are so incompetent it makes me think they are just tripping on having power they never earned, and should have never been granted.

Don't buy any merchandise, don't attend any "celebrations", and don't give them the time of day and watch how fast they pull their heads from arse.

Yes a stupid musical no one cares about. They know what we really want but refuse to give us and they didn't even bother to release two songs from the celebration like they did last year. I think it's some kind of punishment cuz they think we're ungrateful.

Eh, no one even knows who those two really are, at least the general public, so a "fleeting brush with fame" might be pushing it. Don't get me wrong, I preferred when Howe was running things too, but he had to monetize the estate quickly so we somewhat benefited from it. I believe McMillan and Spicer want to monetize it just as much (hell, why else would they even be doing it if not to make money? And to make money you have to sell stuff people will buy.) but all the infighting and ego amongst them and Prince's heirs is making it much harder than it was with Comerica and Howe. Having two separate companies in charge of his legacy, combined with two different records companies with rights depending on region or material, is a clusterfuck. I hope one of the outcomes of this current lawsuit is the judge allowing the heirs to sell their stakes to Primary Wave if they choose to.

I was being a tad sarcastic but take your point nonetheless. And I fully agree and also hope the judge gives the heirs the outcome they're hoping for.

Some orgers here doesn't even deserve that musical.

Troll #1 : " 40th anniversary of Purple Rain is not important because nobody cares about anniversaries"
Troll #2 last week : " Purple Rain SDE is gonna be announced this week and everybody knows that"
Troll #3 : " Purple Rain 40th has been leaked and we all know it s gonna be released this summer"
Troll #4 : " Purple 40th is gonna be announced during the Celebration".
Troll #5 : " the 4k blu-ray is going to have new bonus material, I know better than you, and it is tied with the SDE, and it a sign the estate has a marketing strategy"

Blablabla bullshit

Me : it s a total waste the estate can't just release Purple Rain 40th at least a few days before the actual anniversary. It would have been a smart marketing strategy, making the whole project benefit from free promotion by various medias outlets, who will celebrate the 40th anniversary anyway.
Every SDE needed at least 5 months to be released after the leaks. And there s still nothing leaked publicly.

Have a good day to celebrate that 40th anniversary.

This was my first time going to Celebration or visiting Paisley Park even though I’ve been a fan since 1982. I understand the criticisms - more than anything I would have loved to have Apollonia, Jill Jones and Sheila E. there… or even The Family/F Deluxe. But the highlight of this trip for me was meeting other fans. I’ve met some of the nicest, coolest folks this week and it really uplifted the entire experience.

The Revolution on Friday at First Avenue were amazing. It was surreal to see them in the same space from the film, and I thought they played their hearts out. But Dr Mambo’s Combo really set the bar so high for the entire week with their Prince tribute show at The Parkway Theater. Margie Cox is one of the best singers I’ve ever heard, and it was great to see (and hear) Sonny T.

I don’t know if I’ll be able to afford it again, but this will be a great memory.

They released the movie on 4k, and the soundtrack in Dolby Atmos, a Revolution reunion, plus Swenson's book. I think for the general public (and mass media), that's enough.

There were never any announcment nor rumors of an SDE (like there were for D&P), so I would assume it doesn't exist, maybe because it's a soundtrack owned by WB, and the vault tracks would be owned by Sony. Who knows!

Are you seriously suggesting that a person who uses logic and common sense is a troll?

1.) Hardcore fans are always going to buy the music, regardless of when it's released. How can you disagree with that? Do you really think less hardcore fans would buy a PR SDE if it's released next year because it's not the anniversary year?

2.) According to the experts (professional marketers), casual fans simply don't care about anniversaries. This isn't merely an impression or anacdotel. They have the data (sales figures) to back it up. Releasing a media product (album, movie, book) in the anniversary year barely moves the needle.

If you dismiss that, then *you* ar the troll, not me.

From my understanding the Estate has the rights to unreleased material,so that shouldn't be an issue. Sony has the rights to certain legacy albums "as is", as does WB, but expanded reissues and deluxe editions would fall under different contracts made with the legacy album rights holders for those specific releases.

Can' t you just understand they could have benefited from free buzz?
Of course hardcore fans will buy it anyway.
I know fans who are not even aware of the releases.
Also it could have done something for Purple Rain streaming numbers, that are weak compared to others big artists from the 80's.
