1999, PR and SOTT in Paste Magazine's best 300 albums ever list

Prince would probably be fine with being beaten by number one and number three in the list. they have hissing of summer lawns in there too, which he might enjoy.

Wow, all three nearly made the top 100, and two made the top 20. Love it.

Prince would also be fine with his three albums ranking higher than The Joshua Tree.

I think these are his best albums. But I would include Parade as well.

SOTT not getting album of the year -- as much as that sucked, it kinda made sense. It was a stellar year in "albums". Joshua Tree is U2's "Purple Rain" or "Thriller".

But Purple Rain not getting the album of the year Grammy? In what world did that make sense?

None.

Well, it was somewhat notorious for Darlin' Nikki. Lionel Richie was definitely a safe choice with the widest appeal.

The other three albums were also their artists' "Thriller." (By Springsteen, Turner & Lauper.)

What baffles me is that record and song of the year went to Tina Turner. Good choice, but When Doves Cry or Let's Go Crazy or Purple Rain weren't even nominated.

In the same world where, at the end of 1984. Billboard listed the Top 10 albums of the year.

Purple Rain was only #1 for 24 weeks that year.

And, guesss what, Purple Rain was NOT, was NOT, in Billboard's Top 10 albums of the year.

God, I remember watching Casey Kasem count down the Top 10 on his syndicated TV show of that year and when he was about to announce #1 I KNEW it had to be Purple Rain, but, guess what...It was Thriller!

Purple Rain wasn't even on their list!!

Now, tell me, in what world does that make any sense???!!

I would include also the Black Album in these lists.
1st time I discovered the album back in 2002 it blew my mind.
It sounded really modern.
I have had hard time make Friends of mine interested into Prince music, but this one was easy to get into.
The sound is hard and agressive, really hip hop sound.
Nobody did that at the time.

Moreover, if you add the legend around that album : completely black, every copies destroyed before release, the most looking for bootleg ever at the time...It deserves to be the 4th Prince album in every list ( I know Dirty Mind ranked also in the RS500 list for years).

kind of agree. i think it's always been underrated. on any given day it'd be top 5 p albums for me.

Dirty mind is 10 times a better album than the black album.
Every note was carefully honed on DM..black album is mostly great but its one of his quickie throwaway albums ultimately, like batman. Actually, Batman is actually better than black album. Also, nearly every TBA song is too long (except bob george and rock hard in...). When 2 r... doesnt fit. And dead on it, while dumb, funny and actually very funky, is more like a b side song, at best.
