15 Best Gospel Songs of All Time - No. 11. The Cross by Prince https://singersroom.com/w...-all-time/ “The Cross by Prince is a profound and spiritually charged song…Prince brings a unique blend of rock, funk, and gospel influences to this track, creating a powerful and introspective piece that stands out in his extensive catalog… [it] reflects Prince’s exploration of faith and spirituality, delivering a message of hope and redemption through its poignant lyrics.” Worth a discussion (again) of Prince’s gospel songs, if there truly are any? There may or may not be something coming!

Again, The Cross would have been an easy hit in Europe, such as Sometimes It Snows In April.

Loooool were religious rock songs big in the european charts of 87?
The cross is only gospel in a very broad sense. Lyrically, yes, melodically, but musically? Idk. Few actual gospel radio shows would play it. Pretty sure prince knew that. Christian rock songs might play it though. [Edited 6/3/24 20:24pm]

Each is own but I always liked "Still Would Stand All Time". The movie "Graffiti Bridge", yes ghastly apart the music scenes. "Money won't buy U happiness but it'll pay 4 the search."

Fortunately, I only saw that movie once so the music isn't entirely tainted by that mess. The further removed I am from that the better I can appreciate songs like "Still Would Stand All Time". I like it somewhat but I wouldn't call it- and certainly wouldn't call "The Cross"- gospel.

I like The Cross a lot, especially the SOTT movie version - but I think Anna Stesia tops it easily.
Save me Jesus, I've been a fool
How could I forget that you are the rule You are my God, I am Your child From now on, for you I shall be wild I shall be quick I shall be strong I'll tell Your story, no matter how long We're just a play in Your master plan
Now, my Lord I understand
