Honestly,I think that there is only one truly outstanding song on this album: “Paisley Park”. The other tracks are either just OK (“Pop Life”,”Raspberry Beret”) or downright terrible (“Temptation”). If I had to grade this album,I would give it a B. | |

temptation is underrated. its got certain elements like COTH, its a bit overwrought, theatrical, and dramatic, but thats what i love about both songs, and its done with humour, they dont take themselves too seriously. thats actually something this album is underrated for, the humour, and prince in general. his humour def changed over the years, but on songs like these, its totally charming, clever, and funny. |

Condition of The Heart, just perfection. Paisley Park is great in its uniquely Prince & The Revolution way, Tamborine has always been a favorite, Pop Life, The Ladder, Around the World in A Day... hard to choose. |

Then you find out about the b-sides and 12” inch versions that go with it, and those are like an as until then unknown illegitimate love child turning up in the mix. Anytime picking a favorite side of a record is too hard, picking a favorite song is near impossible.

That's tough! But I've got to say that it's side A for me, even though Pop Life is (barely) my favorite track from the album. I have such warm feelings for this album. I bought it on cassette my senior year in high school (1991). My friend and I cut out of school for the day because we were supposed to wear our costumes from the school play to advertise it to the other students. Our director, who taught two of my classes, was on a rampage that day. But the play was The Crucible - I wasn't going to show up to calculus dressed like a damned pilgrim! So we cut school and went to the mall. I got the cassette of ATWIAD because I didn't want to splurge on the CD. I got yelled at that night as I was offstage during our opening performance - I didn't realize that I was gently singing along to Pop Life on my Walkman. Anytime I listen to this album, it brings me back to that time in my life. Pure joy. |

I do not have a clear favourite, I really like Paisley Park, Raspberry Beret, Pop Life and The Ladder. These are my favourites. I like America and Around the World in A Day.
I am less fond of Tambourine, Temptation and Condition of the Heart (the album version). These are my least favourites. [Edited 6/12/24 7:28am] | |

The thing about "Raspeberry Beret" that has always struck me is that whenever I hear it, ithe song will instantly transform my mood--a powerful thing! I do not roll my eyes over that cheesy little bop. The arrangement of music is strung together quite delightfully. | |

When I saw him live it was great when he played the medley of Take Me With U / Raspberry Beret, because then I knew it was a good time to run to the bathroom without missing anything that I cared about. Take Me With U is fluff and one of my least favorite 80s tracks, but Raspberry is a pop masterpiece with some of his best arrangement ever. |
