Name Album That Took You the Longest to Get Into An album that you bought, listened to and never thought much of.
Until...that one day.
And it became a favorite.
With many Prince albums it would take awhile to get into.
But, for me, the longest span between buying an album and actually digging it is "Hit N Run Phase Two"
When I first bought it, it just seemed boring and too "adult."
I spun a few times, but never really got into it.
Cut to, about six months ago, after I burned out on "Art Official Age" I put Phase Two on and it started digging into me.
To the point, where I'd put it at, or near, the top of his catalogue.
So, it took me 7 1/2 years or so to get into it.
But, I'm sure, you're all like me, one day it's the greatest and then one day you just can't even listen to it.
What album took you the longest to get into?

AOA "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

That trippy shit hooked me from Listen 1.
I still consider it a Top 5 in his catalogue (depending on the day.)
It was always kind-of devastating to listen to - but listening to it after his passing is a whole 'nother level of sad.

. - Phase Two is amazing. I really recommend listening to it with earphones. It´s the kind of album that one should pay attention to the arrangements and production. And there are some very good songs . In my case, it was Lovesexy and Parade. It took me some time to get into them, but today I love them

SOTT came out when I was 11, and I'd say I didn't love it as a whole body of work until I was well into my 20s. Same with Parade. Maybe even 1999 and ATWIAD. For some reason I needed time and maybe adult ears and understanding to get them properly. But for some reason Lovesexy was pretty instant. Maybe because I was eagerly anticipating it and just ready to love it.

For me it was Come. I didn't dislike it but I was ambivalent to it at first. Now I enjoy it. It's not one of my favorites but I like it.

Bria's Elixir. I discarded it as a "coaster" like all the rest of the fanbases in favor of his guitar wank and/or by-the-numbers Linn throwbacks on the other 2 CDs.

lol, and I avoided The Time albums like my entire teenage years because I was like, wtf cares about some Prince wannabes?

Diamonds and Pearls. To be honest, I first started to appreciate it when the super deluxe came out. For decades it was avoided as a full album and taken off the shelf for only a few songs. Alongside the vault material, I've listened to the full album many times in the past year and now realize it's much stronger than my previous judgment. [Edited 5/27/24 20:11pm]

For me I had a hard time getting into Around the World In A Day. I already loved Raspberry Beret ( one of his big hits lol) but one day I just decided to give it a try and as I was listening Paisley Park really caught my attention, then ofc Around the World in a Day became my next favorite off the album...now it's one of my favorite albums
another album that took me a while was For You it didn't really catch my attention until In Love randomly shuffled on my playlist I couldn't believe I'd slept on it for so long!!! Shockadelica, she must be a witch
She got your mind, body, and soul hitched

The Black Album. It always sounded weird to me. Eventually it started to click, track by track, starting with Rock Hard in a Funky Place and more recently Le Grind (if you haven't heard the fanmade stripped down mix, it's slammin': https://www.reddit.com/r/...pped_down/.)

I loved it from Day 1 as well. But it makes me sad listening to it now too. Way Back Home & Affirmation III wrecks me.

I picked up Art Official Age & Plectrumelectrum on the day of release, and at first AOA did little for me. I actually preferred the stripped-down rock sound on Plectrum much more. After a few months of listening to the albums though, this eventually reversed. SO much is going on in AOA that isn't obvious at first, and songs like "Way Back Home" feature some of his most gut-wrenching lyrics. As others have noted, much of that album seems rather bittersweet after his passing. There is a part of me that wants to believe he really did go into some sort of cryogenic stasis as detailed on the Affirmation tracks.

I just typed an over-arcing view of my approach toward appreciating Prince's post--Rainbow Children albums and their grab-bag style of song presentation (always well paced and drenched in ear candy) that that could be a little distracting for me. Anyway, it vanished in2 the ether before I could hit "post," and dangit-- I'm not gonna try 2 type that all over again! > I'll suffice to say that his 1 album that has been hard for me to crack has been AOA. I just can't piece together or accept everything that he is saying in there. He had never sounded that way before, and I don't think the Josh Whelton soundscapes are the only factor here. Perhaps I'm having a mental block on that one.
