The YAY I JUST HEARD PRINCE ON THE RADIO thread

If you hear him, or Prince related something on the radio or television, post. Let us know the song and the general feel from the announcers

Okay, yes, I hear Prince on the radio and absolutely LOVE it!!! Totally appreciate that my local radio station gives him airtime. BUT I also want to say that I have and encourage others who have the ability to put in the footwork. When P transitioned, I made it one of my goals to carry his legacy whenever I could in whatever way I could. I happen to have a friend who is a local radio DJ. He had no interest in Prince before or shortly after his passing. I started hippin' him to Prince's work...would even make promo packets of his CDs with info from Prince Vault and interviews associated with the CD. I truly believe this peaked his interest in P. Now, Prince is regularly on our local radioplay rotation. Am I saying I had that much influence? Maybe, maybe not, but I do believe we can if we try. Let his legacy live on. yes

Welcome home class. We've come a long way. - RIP Prince

Prince is played fairly regularly on BBC radio 6 (the best station in the UK, in my opinion). And even when his music isn't being played, his name often crops up. I've often come into the room to find someone on there talking about Prince in some capacity.

In fact, Yard Act, their current artist in residence, had a whole show dedicated to Prince/artists who have recorded at Paisley Park last night. Not only did they play Paisley Park, Love 2 the 9s, and Cream, they played songs Prince had played on such as No Doubt's Waiting Room, Common's Star 69 (PS with Love), and Madonna's Like a Prayer. They even played two rehearsal bootlegs recorded at Paisley of If I was Your Girlfriend and Strange Relationship!

Even though it wasn't technically a "#1 hit", "Purple Rain" is played across many differently programmed stations here in Germany.

The rock stations even play the full version, which makes the song a stone classic, right along with "Stairway To Heaven" or "Bohemian Rhapsody" biggrin

When I'm driving and flipping through stations I certainly hear the hits on a regular basis.

I didn't know stations played an edited version?

I remember, back in the day, it was kind of a big deal when "Purple Rain" played on the radio, because it was the song was so much longer than the norm.

Two days ago I was in the Chopina airport in Warsaw Poland, and heard 'Raspberry Berret' through the radio in the background while I ordered a coffee... girl was humming to the tune, and asked me if I know this song (as I ordered my coffee in English). She never heard of Prince, but heard the song a few times... "Is he any good?" I smiled and said "find him on YT, you'll see how good he is."

I can still feel the thrill I experienced in '87 when I first heard the B-side 'Shockadelica' on a radio broadcast by DJ Adam Curry (Radio Veronica) in the Netherlands.

The same happened the first time I heard "My Name Is Prince," while driving on the highway in my new car and getting a jaw drop at hearing that hauting bass through my new super speakers I just had installed.

"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

The version that charted in the U.S. was a 4-minute single. That was the version that was played on top 40 radio. I don't remember ever hearing it on NYC rock radio (any version). He gets no airplay on rock/classic rock radio here.

Not counting college radio, of course.

Really? The edited version from the single was on the Purple Rain deluxe edition along with all the other edits of the singles from the album.

On my nonprofit community radio station there are a handful of programmers who will show Prince some love and "spin" his music in his styles of lovesong, political consciousness, danceables, and broadcast live cuts from Live in Las Vegas, It Ain't Over from Rainbow Children Live!, and 21 Nights.

>

After his death they've also featured daylong Prince programming on his birthday. It is nice to hear. cool
