Purple Rain 4K UHD Blu-ray coming at end June 2024. From 8K scan of camera negative. No new extras.

Previous thread: https://prince.org/msg/7/470711

.

What is known:

.

- Release date 25 June.

.

- UK gets two (limited edition) Steelbook editions besides the standard release. One has the same artwork as the standard release and is available through multiple retailers, the other one is an HMV exclusive: https://hmv.com/store/fil...ion-steelb

.

- UK Steelbooks appear to have a later release date: 29 July.

.

- No info on a USA release of a Steelbook; it is possible that they might be vendor exclusives.

.

- Based on 8K scan of the camera negative. (2016 Blu-ray is based on a 2K scan of the interpositive, the first Blu-ray was based on an old HD scan first done for the 20th anniversary DVD release.)

.

- "Purple Rain has been digitally restored from a new 8K scan of the original camera negative, and “conformed to the original theatrical release aspect ratio of 1.85:1 to provide the most authentic theatrical presentation framing ever to be released to the home.” Look for HDR10 high dynamic range only."

.

- Sound has been restored “from the original Dolby Stereo (LCRS) archived 35mm magnetic film source elements containing the separate dialogue, music, and effects (DME) tracks. These restored elements along with the 20th anniversary’s 5.1 multi-channel print master were used to complete a newly remastered 5.1 presentation for the film.”

.

- It seems we're getting a DTH-HD Master Audio 2.0 audio track, so that could mean we're finally getting the original stereo audio from the movie!

.

- No Dolby Vision, no Dolby Atmos.

.

- No new extras, plus the 4K doesn't have all the extras from the previous Blu-ray and DVD releases. Extras are not in 4K, however they might be upscaled to 1080p from their SD originals since the 4K standard does not allow for SD content. So USA buyers will need to hang on to their previous Blu-rays if they want to have all the extras.

.

- UK gets UHD + Blu-ray combinations, with the Blu-ray containing the extras that are not on the UHD. Listings seem to suggest the Blu-ray contains only the extras that are not on the UHD, which would mean a new Blu-ray is included, not the 2016 one. If ther eis a new Blu-ray, it is possible the movie on that Blu-ray is a new encode, based on the same source as the 4K, and has the same updated audio as the 4K. However, this is all speculation for now, since no details have been provided. If ther eis a new Blu-ray, no info is known about its release in the USA.

.

- USA gets UHD + digital code; the UK does not get a digital code.

.

- The movie will also be available in 4K Ultra HD for purchase Digitally from Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play, Fandango at Home and more.

I don't think I've watched the Purple Rain movie in over 15 years now.

But this is a great incentive to watch it again, in such good quality. Looking forward to this cool

I wonder if they were able to clean up the part of the film that was very dark in Prince's bedroom

Do you mean "The Matter With This House" scene? If so, I don't know how portions of that scene could be improved much as some of those shots were sourced from a workprint and not the camera negative. However, I'm not a film expert.

I preordered the U.K. standard cover steelbook since that retains all the extras from the previous Blu-ray unlike the U.S. release. This will be my sixth time purchasing this movie after previously owning the VHS, special edition DVD, digital and two Blu-ray discs.

FYI It's a BD-66, which is somewhat disappointing.

A Tudahl/McMillian/Spicer project so for sure disappointing.

This year was an easy layup and they all found a way to not capitalize on an anniversary year.

If there is ever other people in charge, i hope they start over with a clean slate with different authority on charge of things.

This unboxing video shows that we do indeed get the original (stereo) theatrical track! This is its first appearance in decades, since all home video releases since the movie's release on DVD have only included the 5.1 mix.

They re-released this in 2016 after Prince died. It was great seeing it on the big screen again, it was just like seeing it for the first time.

I don't know how much more "wow" they can squeeze out of it -- hopefully they don't go as far as some of the James Cameron re-issues that started to use AI to clean them up.

Like so many previous times: you're wrong.

.

The 2016 BD uses a 2K scan of the interpositive, whereas the 2007 BD uses an old HD master originally created for the 2004 20th anniversary 2DVD release. So the 2016 release was not a re-release.

.

Also, Warners has two internal treams who work on restorations (one of them works exclusively on releases for the Warner Archive label), and who have often gotten rave reviews for their work. It has nothing to do with Cameron's lazy garbage. Warners did 8K scans of the original camera negative.

.

All of this has been documented in this thread and the previous thread. Instead of spouting nonsense, you could simply have read all that info and learned something.

The reviews i'm reading are all excellent...sound and visual. The 4K release is a major step forward is what I'm reading from reliable sites. I can't wait to get my copy.

Ooops! I bought the blu-ray then discovered I need to upgrade my blu-ray player to a 4K compatiable one.
