Simple Question: R u happy with the Estate?

Simple answer from me: No, not even close.

I think we should have overwhelmed with music some 8 years after Prince's death.

Ok it's not what we expected but we can at least acknowledge that there were lots of releases since Prince passed away.

-"Originals"

-"Piano & A Microphone 1983"

-3 B-sides from "Musicology"

-"His Majesty's Pop Life"

-"1999" SDE

-"Welcome 2 America"

-"Live In Syracuse"

-"Up All Nite With Prince"

-"Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic"

-"Diamonds And Pearls" SDE

-"Sign O' The Times" SDE

-"7 (E Flat Version)" single

-"All A Share Together Now" single

I may have forgotten some ! biggrin

I truly hope that I'll B still alive 2 get a "Parade" SDE (my favorite era) or The First Avenue 83' release (at last !)

Please ask Michael Jackson's fans what they feel...

It was ok when Comerica was in charge. Not great or amazing or what it should have been for such an artist and Vault but ok.

Since july 22, with the current team, it's just getting worse & worse. Using time & energy in putting up cases and trials not in releasing music.

Sharon what did else you expect by hiring lawyers instead of music industry professionnals ? Now you reap what you've sown. And we all thank you for that.

I wouldn't include "His Majesty's Pop Life", "Up All Nite With Prince", and "Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic" in that list, though. They contained previously released tracks with no sound improvement (right?).

If my math is correct, and I'm being generous here, we've got 24 CDs worth of previously unreleased music (studio/live) since 2016. That's about 3 CDs per year if we exclude 2016 and 2024.

3 CDs per year: it's not nothing, but it's not fantastic either.

By releasing "diverse" releases (studio recordings, main tour concerts, one-off performances, TV appearances, soundchecks, etc. from different periods), they could easily release 12 CDs worth of music per year without saturating the "market".

I perfectly understand that they can't release everything from the vault and I'm fine with that, but releasing at least one show per tour, at least a dozen one-off performances, etc. is, I think, not much to ask. According to PrinceVault, Prince did 37 tours in his career. That's at least 50 shows they should release. At the current rate (about 1 previously unreleased live perfomance per year on average), I'd have to become a centenarian to hear all those shows. That's not good.

So, no, I'm not happy with the Estate. But I'm not "actively" not happy. Just a bit frustrated. They could do a lot better.

I feel like out of all the MJ / Prince comparisons they're least relevant when it comes to fans and pining for unreleased material.

The whole hook of Prince has always been the excess of material and the vaunted Vault of thousands of outtakes has been spoken of/alluded to by the fanbase for decades. Every Prince fans got their own unique ranking of material, etc.

Whereas MJ fans in the wild mostly debate between the same 2 or 3 albums being his best. And it's usually coincidentily enough the albums with the overplayed megahits, and they whine about the 1 or 2 non-megahits on the albums dragging the sequence down, etc.

Like it's only the creme de la creme uber nerd MJ fans I ever see bring up outtakes, the rest seem perfectly happy putting on "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" for the kazillionth replay. Very few are repping "Got the Hots" or whatever, I still feel like 90% of the "MJ stan" debates I observe on the internet they probably don't even have a copy of 'HIStory'.

What do you want from them? To release all the music at once? Like it or not I think they know what they are doing. You have to spread it out and be strategici with it all. I would rather wait for new music then have it all at once.

I would like to see PP used for more things besides tours and fashion shows.. The studios to be activiley used by folks even with tours going on. How cool would it be to be on a tour and not know who is recording there or who may be there.

Give it time....

There are many possibilities between "releasing it all at once" (which wouldn't make any sense, I agree) and releasing previously unreleased recordings at the pace they're releasing them now. Which is very, very, very slow.

The math is quite simple, actually (see my reply above). They need to release stuff faster.

The estate that gave us 1999 and SOTT SDEs? Yes. They had their issues and shortcomings, but at least made a genuine effort with their releases.

The current estate? No. Hell no.

No.

I have no idea why the estate is being so slow about it.The music is already recorded. All they have to do is compile this stuff, package it nicely and watch us open our wallets, lol.

We should be getting two SDEs a year. And how about some blu-ray sets of the live performances? Let's get it out there!

Yes they know we're willing to pay for more than one release a year so they should speed up the releases. It's also frustrating to see all the missed opportunities by the estate.

The Estate is too busy with the in-fighting to worry about what the fans want.

Let's be serious all they want is $$$$ they could care less about Prince's Legacy.

We all know that they could release more than they have, we don't need re-masters, give us Piano and a Microphone 2016.

Celebration tickets are over $1000 bucks,, that's ridiculous. And, it's nothing but the same ole, same ole. Same ole people that we've heard how much they did for Prince and how they made him.

Get Judith Hill, Tamryn Hall, Andy Allo. JUST GET SOMEONE NEW!

My issues with the Estate's work:
There have been problems of one kind or another with pretty much every posthumous release so far: either sound quality issues, misprints and, worst of all, frankenstein mixes.
A strong lack of transparency (sometimes blatant lies in the Howe era) regarding what was found in the vault and what was done with/to the recordings they chose to release.
Given the insane amount of material at their disposal, they should find a way to release much more music than they have so far (a subscription service being the most obvious solution besides the yearly deluxe package).
I hope they will learn from past mistakes and that things will improve in the future.

No offense meant to you or anyone else, but I'm sometimes baffled to see how many people are willing to defend a corporate, money making machine, when there have been a long series of objective problems with the releases. It's particularly sad when one remembers how Prince was constantly (sometimes viciously) attacked on this board in his lifetime, with every move he made being criticized by his own fanbase.
What does it say about our society if corporate entertainment industries get more support than the artists that create the material in the first place?

Did you included/calculate the edits and other (remix) versions per released SDE we all already have?

No, I only included previously unreleased recordings:

1 CD Purple Rain Deluxe (vault disc)
1 CD Piano & A Microphone 1983
1 CD The Versace Experience (Prelude 2 Gold)
1 CD Originals
2 CD 1999 SDE (vault discs)
1 CD 1999 SDE (Detroit show)
1 CD 1999 SDE (Houston show) (DVD)
3 CD Sign O’ The Times SDE (vault discs)
2 CD Sign O’ The Times SDE (Utrecht show)
2 CD Sign O’ The Times SDE (Paisley Park show) (DVD)
1 CD Welcome 2 America
2 CD Welcome 2 America (Inglewood show) (Blu-ray)
3 CD Diamonds And Pearls SDE (vault discs)
2 CD Diamonds And Pearls SDE (Glam Slam show)

That's 23 CDs, not 24 CDs. My bad. And you can probably combine "Piano & A Microphone 1983" and "The Versace Experience (Prelude 2 Gold)" into a single CD, as they're both short and "The Versace Experience (Prelude 2 Gold)" only contains a few previously unreleased tracks anyway. So that's even worse: 22 CDs. Spread over 7 years.

As a reference point, the "Complete Miles Davis At Montreux 1973-1991" box set contains 20 CDs. Released in 2002. This is just a single example of relatively ambitious archival release for another artist. There are many similar examples.

Prince deserves better.

We've all got our own ideas on how the estate SHOULD be doing things and I don't think any of our ideas match up with exactly how things have been handled up to this point.

Personally, I'd like to see three releases per year with a set schedule. For example;

Every March - A one or two disc set containing vault material from the mid 90s up to his passing.

Every June - A Live DVD/CD combo of a concert from the mid 90s up to his final shows.

Every October - A Super Deluxe Edition of each of his albums from For You right up to the Love Symbol album, featuring all available outtakes from each album, live shows, DVD (if available).

Also, I'd like to see proper remasters of associated artists albums to celebrate their own anniversaries.

Now, if the estate did all that, I'd be truly delighted. But I know they're not going to do any of that. But I'd settle for maybe an update on what their actual plans are. If they have any. I'd be happy if they were to just let people know what to expect in the medium to long term.

I think they might have a plan but refuse to share it with us (thats why there's lack of communication) and don't seem to care about our opinion and what we really want. Instead they upset the fans like last year when the estate refused to released all the celebration tracks for instance, but instead we only got 2 songs and it was like a slap in the face. And when they tried to get us excited about an announcement for Musicology, but we only got United States of Division. This move really backfired on them on social media, with fans feeling upset and disappointed. Instead of building a wall between us and them, they should be more open and communicate with us. I think that's the only way forward, so we can preserve Prince's legacy together instead of arguing.
