Soooooo early on! I just watched it before seeing your post.
Fink in prison gear (which Rick James' band had and Fink changed it to scrubs)
Gayle's still there.
Of course Andre and Dez. Amazing that in just a few short years, only Fink & Z would be the original two left.
I wonder if Andre will use the cloud bass for the WYWTMSB performance? Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

??? This has been out for years. Dez Dickerson, in his book, writes how there was no studio audience; the heads you see occasionally are show crewmembers. Definitely miming to the recording. Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me. |

Most of those variety shows had lip sync performances. American Bandstand, Solid Gold, Soul Train, etc. It just wasn't always viable to have a live setup.

I remember staying up late to watch this. If I'm correct, I think this was taped in December 1979. To see some video of P from the 70's is cool. Picked this up on a VHS bootleg comp. in 1992. |

Princevault says:
Taped January 8, 1980
Aired January 12, 1980 on NBC.
The show aired Jan 11, but the performance itself was after midnight, ergo the date difference.
Those were days I certainly wasn't up watching TV at midnight. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

it's always great to see early Prince performances. He was so bold and raw! He was truly focused and had a clear idea what type of artist he wanted to be. |

They could do it tho. Just lazy or cheap or something. If I recall correctly, Al Green and Patti Labelle sang live on Soul Train. But Prince didn't. |

Yeah, but you're looking at costs from a production side, not just cuz it pleases you to do so on your own dime. Money didn't flow quite as much as it did later when people like Arsenio had the best sound in late night.
Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |
