Gotta love fans who know nothing yet feel confident enough to slander someone.

The Schecter Habibe is a copy of the Auerswald Symbol guitar.

Compare to: http://guitarcloud.org/eq...oud-guitar

a custom guitar built for Prince by Dave Rusan

.

And yes, I know it is based on the Sardonyx bass. But a bass guitar and a guitar are vastly different instruments.

Thanks for setting the record straight Bizzie. Yeah I'm sure Andy is a great guy but imho it was pretty unethical of Prince to commission him to clone the original design from Jerry Auerswald. Having spoken with him I get the impression that whole experience was pretty traumatic.

Also, Dave Rusan definitely designed and built the cloud guitar. Of course it was inspired by another instrument, which in turn was inspired by other instruments, but the cloud guitar is sufficiently transformative and impactful that I feel strongly that Dave deserves the credit on that.

Are you suggesting Dave Rusan didn't design the cloud guitar because it was based on a similar shaped bass?

As other people have pointed out, he copied Auerswald's design, so his was actually less original because he didn't have to adapt it to a larger, different instrument.

Also, Auerswald's design was copied off the Prince symbol, so he didn't invent the shape.

YES, he was given the Bass and he copied it... but a guy named Levin made the bass but he copied it overall look off a gibson mandolin.

But Dave hardly desine its look... for him to take credit is a big money grab...which I am cool with...but lets just be honest. (and even then it would likely be a work for hire. )

This is nonsense. Dave has never ever taken credit for that design.

Dave Rusan has publicly stated, in many interviews, that the cloud guitar was commissioned (whilst he was at Knut Koupee) as a guitar prop for the movie based on the Sardonyx bass. He's been really open about that, so maybe get your facts straight before dragging someone's name through the mud unnecessarily. He's never taken full credit for the aesthetic design of the instrument.

As you said the original design came from the bass, and the bass in turn borrowed elements from other instruments including vintage mandolins. But the original cloud guitars were made by Mr. Rusan, and he did a great job - such a great job that those were functioning instruments that became an important part of Prince history.

Anyway, this thread was about Mr. Beech, another insanely talented luthier but unfortunately one who was commissioned to clone other instruments sometimes under tricky circumstances. Habibi in particular is a problematic one and I know Jerry was upset about it. The original love symbol guitar is very unique and it carries Auerswald branding.
