Paisley Park Guide: tapes for an unreleased pre-Controversy album have mostly disintegrated

Source: https://www.facebook.com/...476167640/

.

I did an Ultimate Tour of PP this past weekend. The guide told a story that was new to me. He said they found a completed album that was recorded in the time between the Prince and Controversy albums but that half of the tapes had deteriorated beyond use.

Man this guy has it good. On my tour I kept harassing the guide about Bloody Mouth and all I got was "I don't know what that is" and "sir if you scream at me one more time I'm going to call security to have you removed"

On paper the rebels stuff sounds magical, but something about it just doesn't work.

It's probably 'The Time', I feel like everyone involved with the Prince Estate just happens to have barely a skimmed Wikipedia appraisal of his discog.

or it could actually be an actual album of unreleased prince compositions.
especially since so many of us have been wondering why there are so few
outtakes from certain periods around this era. so who knows.

In cases such as this, I really, really hope that former musicians, former engineers, or "elite traders" have good copies of those recordings. Whatever they are. And that, ultimately, the Estate will work with those persons to complete their incomplete archive.

Just to never release it and post a Musicology B-side on streaming platforms instead lol

On that same facebook note, some one else said this :

"Dave Hampton (engineer during the early 2000’s) has said on more than one occasion that when he first got to paisley that when he was attempting to do transfers a lot was unusuable and that Prince told him to trash/destroy whatever wasn’t usable. So it’s accurate unfortunately for a lot of stuff. Also why the estate is working with “elite” traders in the bootleg community on projects. At least they were."

I saw that. It would be interesting to know what we're talking about here (e.g. stereo mixdowns vs multitrack tapes, magnetic tapes vs other media, etc.).

The part about "elite traders" is intriguing. That would be a good thing.

I was actually quite surprised by the low sound quality of "Anna Waiting". I can only imagine that Anna received that song on a cassette tape and that it wasn't preserved in ideal conditions all those years. We're talking about a 36-year-old tape, after all...

IIRC she sold her tape ages ago to a collector.

Well she still has a(nother) copie of it obviously.

Tape is tricky, my casstes & DAT tapes, and machines are all"sticky", which really sucks.

My 2 cassette machines & Dat machine probably have less than 10 hours of use since purchased them new decades ago.

a) You obviously don't know the meaning of "obtuse".

.

b) I'm not running two profiles. The Org is broken and I cannot retrieve my password. Don't even pretend I'm the only one to have created a new account after their old account became inaccessible after the hack. If you care so much about me running two accounts, why didn't you check my other account and check when that was last used? Did that require too much effort? I guess it's just easier to throw around unfounded accusations.

.

c) STICK. TO. THE. FUCKING. TOPIC.

You didn't need to answer Bart, if you think this was so (un)important.

Back to the fucking topic, (for everyone else) ;

-

I honestly find it strange that tape can disintegrate (I had to look that one up).

Don't get me wrong, for sure I believe this is true.

But, how come we have tracks like 'Neurotic Lover's Bedroom, or even early recordings than this mentioned album?

Must be that they one got out of the vault quite early in time, before the 'disintegrate' begWho says this album wasn't copied by someone who had access to the vault many years ago? Liek amongst elite traders ?

I'm not an expert, just trying to understand this here.

(Or) do (those very early) cassettes (recordings) also disintegrate (fast)?

Certain tape is more likely to go bad than others, same with the tape in cassettes. It's just a luck of the draw thing otherwise, of course how they were stored can make a difference. Some cassettes from the 70s are probably flawless and some aren't. For early stuff we've heard, one can assume they were transferred off the tape many times over way before there was any concern of the tape gunking up

Ha, ha! I thought about this as well: tour guides are not always very knowledgeable. And I know tour guides at some other place who repeat anecdotes told by other tour guides. And you know what happens when you do that. Yeah, exactly.

Given everything else the estate and Paisley Park have done in the last year or two, it doesn't surprise me that they're hiring tour guides with only a tenuous knowledge of Prince and his history lol
