***NEW EPS - Tamar gets emotional on lost album Milk & Honey: "I'm not gonna wait on The Estate..."***

In part 2 of the podcast interview, Tamar is open and honest about her chemistry and spiritual connection with Prince, but also the neagitve aspect of his competitiveness and 'isms'.

She also discusses touring the US with Prince as her guitar player, and the lost album album Milk & Honey. "I'm not gonna wait on The Estate..."

Tamar ends by talking about how their friendship endured after they stopped working together, and her plans for 2024 and beyond, including a hook up with Stewart Copeland from The Police.

I remember she once said she discovered she owned the masters for the album and was planning to release the tracks mixed up with other non-Prince related unreleased material. I hope she changes her mind and release Milk & Honey exactly as it was when it was shelved. The Estate has been messing around with unreleased material enough as is. There we have a completed album and it would be great to get it the way she and Prince envisioned it.

Actually officially released as a promo , then pulled.

My understanding is it wasn't a promo but copies were sent to some Japanese record stores ahead of the planned release, and some were sold or stolen before said stores were asked to send them back. So officially never released in any form or shape, more a TBA scenario.

A few copies "escaped" from the Japanese near release.

it's a nice album, and she has a cool voice. i love how all of her backing vocals give 3121
a lot of cohesion over all the tracks.

Funky cover

I love the cover, looks like a vintage 70s soul/disco LP:

When did she discover she owns the masters? The fact that she does is not surprising, given Prince's stance on the matter, but I find it rather puzzling that she discovered that fact so long after the cancellation. I mean even if it was 10 years ago, in which case it would be surprising that she still hasn't released it.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter much, as the album is already available in excellent (perfect?) quality. This would only change the status of the album (which would become official). Unless if Tamar releases different versions/mixes.

It's an interview I heard maybe 5 or 6 years ago? It's all from memory, but IIRC she'd always assumed Prince owned the masters and realized she did rereading the contracts after he passed or something like that.

My understanding of American law is that songwriters need to give permission for a song's first release (unlike covers), however, so in that regard it's possible the Estate may be able to block Tamar from releasing the songs from M&H that weren't already released as singles.

And yes it's true it doesn't matter for us whether the original album is preserved as such since it leaked long ago, but it'd be nice for Prince's legacy to add it to the "canon" as it was. I'm still super pissed they messed around with Welcome 2 America lol

Despite his "artists should be free and own their masters" discourse, P was more ambiguous that it seems regarding this. He locked Jill Jones to her contract for years, preventing her from releasing anything with another label. He wouldn't allow The Time and The family to even use their former names. He (the Estate now, I guess) most likely still owns the masters for many Paisley Park albums, including some he had nothing/little to do with like George Clinton's. And while he claimed Larry and Chaka owned the masters for their 1998-99 albums, the indicia still read (p) NPG Records (but TGE's indicia said (p) WB, when we learned later the masters for that one had reverted to Prince, so who knows...). I would also be somewhat surprised to learn Bria Valente owws her solo album, for example.

Prince's discourse on masters was something that happened post-PP Records though. Valid point on band's using their names.

True, but I don't think Prince rushed to give back their masters to George and co. Given George never rereleased them, I suspect Cinderella and Finger are still in the Estate's hands.

Jill was locked until 1994, it appears, thus some time after the WB wars begun.

Another interesting thing is that in the mid-2000's Prince apparently filed a copyright registration for the names Good Question and Mazarati. To what purpose? It's a total mystery to me but my guess would be to secure his ownership of those acts' PP masters even more. Why else on Earth would he want to own the name Good Question, a long defunct act he had absolutely nothing to do with? eek

Now my point isn't to criticize Prince, he sometimes had double standards and most of us sometimes do, but I understand why Tamar would assume he owned her masters (even more so that it was as much his record than hers, creatively speaking).

And the fact that no journalist never asked him anything on those topics is a bit frustrating.
