Roadhouse Garden - The Lost Prince and the Revolution album

An amazing article about the lost album between Purple Rain and Around the World in a Day by Vas Christian.

A very well-written and enjoyable article. biggrin As for the chances of a track list seeing the light of day, well if Neversin or the Estate is willing. lol But... When they're done releasing Purple Rain over and over again, maybe the Estate'll look to the follow-up, Dance Electric, that would have continued musically where Purple Rain left off before Prince decided to go in another direction with Around The World In A Day - and then they can sell it as "the previously unreleased sequel to PURPLE RAIN!" biggrin lol

was the Dance Electric project a real thing? I always thought it was just a fan's dream biggrin I would have loved an album like that.

Cool read but i still wasnt exactly clear what really was on a planned RHG album.
Never knew about the commissioned artwork though. That made it more interesting.

I enjoyed this article so much.I love to discuss abandoned projects. So interesting to think about what could have been. Also fun to speculate on what tracks would have been included.

Great article.

I really hope the album is in vault. If it does exist it would make for a fantastic release.

Honestly?

Meh...

Would ''Katrina's Paper Dolls'' be the opener for side 2, or "She's Always In My Hair"?

It would be strange to put Katrina's..." after "Electric Intercourse" on side 1 as well.

Of course all base on the versions we know.

what a fantastic article.....amazing research. I have to say, again, this man had so much creativity that he was just unable to find enough avenues to get it out. I didn't realize Pop Life was recorded before When Doves Cry. It floors me to think of what it may have been like for him....day after day, new song ideas.

Fun read!

I have had a Roadhouse Garden playlist for a few years now with these tracks and a few others with W&L involvement. Its been a staple "album" that I listen to pretty regularly. So many quality tracks from that era that he sat on for too long imo.

Certainly an interesting read, that! But to be honest, I can't believe that the Neon Park artwork would have been the album cover, though. I'd rather see that painting hanging in my living room than on an album cover. Who would take Prince seriously as an artist if that were an album cover?

Talking of unreleased albums, I did come across one story told to someone by one of the guides at Paisley that they found a completed album recorded sometime between the Prince and Controversy albums but half the tapes deteriorated beyond use! (This is on Duane's Complete Studio Sessions group on Facebook).

Could be The Rebels, The Hookers (if they ever had one complete album!)... any other ideas?

1) Well, that cover WAS rejected. smile

2) I always figured that all those rock-a-billy tunes that kept popping up back then - Gotta Stop (Messin' About), Broken, Tick, Tick, Bang, Jack U Off, Horny Toad - must've come from somewhere. razz

Switch Electric Intercourse and Katrina's Paper Doll, and it seems like a great facsimile of the Dance Electric album. biggrin

If this album had been released back then (with the tracklist above),what do you think the singles should have been?

I say "The Dance Electric" as the first single and then "She's Always In My Hair" for the second single.

and then maybe "Electric Intercourse" as the third single.

I do think the vault disc of the Purple Rain disc is the my favourite of the Individual discs that have been released.

It flows the best.

This thread made me give it a listen this morning. Great stuff.

Obviously it could have been much better

Fully agree. Faulted as it is it goes straight to the point, while the (arguably) better curated SDE vault discs released later, at times, feel somewhat superfluous.

Agree. Prince would never have released that cover lol. Except maybe when his standards for artwork had fallen in the 00s.

I've read the article twice now and enjoyed it both times. biggrin Some thoughts: reading

1) Katrina's Paper Dolls, Strange Relationship and Wonderful Ass were all originally recorded in 1982 according to The Chronological Prince Recordings Index, so the Katrina's Paper Dolls album might actually have been compiled earlier than surmised here. cool

2) Velvet Kitty Cat (previously Mink Kitty Cat for Vanity 6) was recorded with Prince vocal in April 1983 and was considered for Apollonia 6 in 1984. smile

3) Prince was happy enough with Strange Relationship to play it for Neal Karlen in his car during the 1985 interview for Rolling Stone. wink

4) An edit of The Dance Electric exists which might have been made for album inclusion. biggrin

Thanks to VasChristian for an engaging and great read. worship

Brenda Bennett has confirmed that a second Vanity 6 album, recorded in spring 1983,was completed.I wonder if "Mink Kitty Cat" is one of the songs.Do you have any info on what the tracklist looks like?

Yes, in Phonogenics 101: Discussing the Apollonia 6 album track by track with Brenda Bennett on YouTube, she does say the album was completed, but then she retracts a bit by adding that they certainly had recorded enough songs for an album to be compiled. confused

I have no further insigths about that album beyond what is already known. sad

Prince himself said the second V6 album was completed. I don't know why this is even up for debate when we already have Vibrator seguing into the opening of G-Spot. The album was completed, sequenced and mixed before being shelved.
