The fact that this song is on the album and I still put 1999 as a top 10 album of all time for me says more about the other songs than it does about Free.

Free is ok and all but, I love "Moon Beam levels" and that is the track I think should be on 1999. Something about Free doesn't ring true, but Prince seemed to enjoy it and play it on the one night alone tour etc.

I absolutely loooooove free. I don't get the hate at all.

Same for Arms Of Orion. I only wish it was a duet with Jill Jones or Susanah.

I love it too. Better than some of the more repetitive stuff on the album for me.

+1 for Free, powerful track, so expressive. Vocal peak and guitar outro need a revisit if you're a Free hater.

It's one of the many reasons this can never be a Top 10 Prince album for me.

Him looping some albeit solid grooves to the point of no return is another. There are some who say "Let's Pretend We're Married" is still looping to this day.

I've always like Free and always preferred it to Moonbeam Levels.

"Free" is one of my Top 3 songs (with "17 Days" & "Sometimes It Snows In April").

This one is WAY more significant:

1996Prince attends a meeting with Warner Bros. executives in Los Angeles, where a termination agreement had been worked out for Prince to deliver two more albums to close his contract, instead of the three that he owed them. He presented Chaos And Disorder and The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale at the meeting, complete with the artwork design. The record company had no influence whatsoever over the contents of either album.

Unique thing about this song is that it features all the girls singing in the background.. Wendy, Lisa, Vanity and J.J.

3 x 2 = 6 is actually probably the much worse song in this style from this era

There's just something so cheesy about it, it's like I'm Proud To Be An American levels of cheese. It's so over the top, I just can't do it. Rare misstep from this time period, but it was a misstep. It's not a terrible, unlistenable song - I just can't get through it in the context of the album and never seek it out on its own.

THIS.

Fuck y'all hate of "Free." It's a great song tucked right in the middle of the record.

"Moonbeam Levels" is one of my all time favorite bootlegs. While it wasn't considered for 1999, it surely could've been on there had "Free" not existed. I don't see why ML wasn't ever a b-side during that period.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

There's medication for that.

Or,

listen to it on headphones, with US who like it in mind.

And try to discover why it is so ... brilliant! wink

Repeat that 5 times,

spin around three times between each listen session,

do a split by juming from a table in the end,

and finally say these words loud, while looking in a mirror:

"I know your heart is beating, my drummer tells me so
If you take your life for granted, your beating heart will go
So don't sleep until you're guilty, 'cause sinners all are we
There's others doing far worse than us, so be glad that you are free"

Sometimes a song just sucks, whether you listen to it once or a dozen times. I can appreciate the basic message of the song but the musical execution was lame as hell to my ears.
