I wonder if there's another version in the Vault because NS claimed in 2005 that it was New York in this thread: https://prince.org/msg/7/128429
He also said Anna Waiting wasn't the original first recording because he shared a sample of a earlier version to some. Same with the alternate lyrics verion of Pink Cashmere. I lovce the vocals on Anna Waiting. Checked some old notes and the earliest version is said to be a 'appology song' for someone (other than Anna) going by the lyrics and is from early 88
[Edited 4/23/24 0:55am] Possibly SusANNAh Waiting? Dependent on how much earlier he started messing with the song? blah blah blah |

So he didn't just groom her, he gave her recycled hand-me down songs originally written for other women and had the gall to be like "babe, it's cool if I switch all the words to your song to be about Batman's girlfriend instead right?"
I find that more egregious than the cradle-robbing, or at least perhaps as egregious. The Manipulative Experience. Dude was probably presenting these re-writes to her on the eve of her 18th like Capt'n Swoon to the rescue.
And poor girl's still getting emotionally wrapped up in "her" songs as a fully grown adult woman, with the full-on purple pavlovian conditioning. What I love is Prince fans'll be like, "he didn't groom her, she's fine. If she doesn't complain it's not grooming." k...

If Anna doesn't have an issue with the "Recycled" song I don't see why you should. |

Isn't this what he did most of the time? Saying a song is about this girl and saying to another girl that same song is about her? But even tho therre is a earlier version with different lyrics and instrumentation he later recoded it as Anna Waiting so he did record it for her eventually.

in fairness to prince, he at least did give GFs something in return. mayte got an album, carmen got an album, vanity, appollonia, etc. anna got a raw deal, as it doesnt look like she got anything in the way of a record, or a position in the band, etc etc. maybe sly stone did it better though, and saved us from having to listen to a lot of bad records. he would just record girls he liked, so they would think they were going to be on one of his songs, then he would wipe their vocals afterwards. |

Finally "Anna Waiting"
As a collector I only wish it would be better quality and more complete. I guess about 2 minutes in the beginning are missing.
This version is very close to the released one which is no surprise because it was recorded only about 2 months prior to the reworking.
Still very nice to have.
This gives some hope that apart from the rare official SDE releases, there might be some more surprises in private hands, that haven't been shared yet. But hopefully will be shared before I'm 80 ys old.
