I don't see anything wrong with that. Let the estate make money off licensing his songs
for commercials. If it gets them a nice fat cheque that can go toward the preservation /
future release of more music, why not?

Besides, as with this Target ad, his music is so amazing that it takes the spotlight and at
the end of the commercial you basically just want to go listen to the song and forget the
advertisment lol

I've heard the commercial from the other room, never realized it was Kristn Wiig doing that role again! Awesome.

Target is a Minneapolis-based company, and they seemed to have several Prince tie-ins while he was still alive (the LF/MPLSound package and commercial being one of them). Prince seemed to like Target. I don't think he would have a problem with this.

All of this. 👍🏻

And let me add: People are gonna piss on every time a Prince song is used in an ad, but you know what - this is called monetizing the estate. You use what you have to generate income. That means Prince songs will (selectively) end up in commercials. Hell, did he sell out when he actually did a Target ad for LF/MPLS? Of course not. Fans were all pro-Target then. The estate can't stay alive and well by "protecting the legacy" by not letting a company use a song, or someone do a cover, or whatever.

Until folks are running an estate like Prince's, maybe they should just take a seat and let the professionals handle it.

They haven't shown up to the thread yet, but they will. lol lol

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Yeah, I'm calling shenangans on this "Well, I support it because The Estate has to make money to put out more stuff we want," line of defense.

We've been chanting that same load of B.S. for like 8 years now, and we don't even have 8 SDE's to show for it.

Where is any example that hocking his tracks for commercial play or supporting "When Doves Cry" underoos has directly correlated in more of what we want?

D&P SDE? Now Musicology SDE? Purple Rain SDE?

I'd settle for one track of what I want. It ain't happening, they're probably cooking the books so it gets funneled into the Leon Spencer Dinwitty offshore Swiss bank account anyway. You're all being played, Stop stunting for these clowns already.

I like I how it is used- it's part of the whole story of the ad, rather than just background music for the sake of it - and I think the editing is done well on the song too.

This same song was used in a Targé ad years back, as well as Tina's "Simply The Best".

When was "Baby I'm A Star" in a Target ad before? They used "Dreamer" for the Lotus promotion.

I have that Tina Turner EP. It was a Target-only disk called All That Glitters.

Baby I'm A Star

Let's Stay Together

Private Dancer

What's Love Got To Do With It

When The Heartache is Over (Live)

Hold On I'm Coming (Live)

The Best (Edit)

The Prince cover (her second on record) is the only new song on the album.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I can't find it anymore, but i swear there was an ad with a graphic of the circles of the "target" shooting towards the viewer.

Maybe during the NFL playoffs years back before he passed.

I remember this only because the question was how could Target use "Baby, I'm A Star" without Prince's permision.

The answer was because he didn't yet own the rights to the song, WB did.

Didn't Prince himself let his music be used in commercials?
He did a Verizon ad including a video for Guitar so I don't think he was opposed to it just to be opposed to it.

Horseshit. Prince always owned the rights to the song. If Target wanted to use a cover of his song, he had to approve. If Target wanted to use his recording, then both he and Warners needed to approve.

We need his music to be used more so even more people get exposed to it. It doesn't matter anymore if he would approve.

As long as it's not used in the way of shitty contemporary 15 minute of fame bullshit artists raping his material or making garbage remixes of them.
Only using it for commecrials or in movies should be done. Leave the material as is alone and license them for movies or whatever.

Somehow y'all keep forgetting that Prince was definitely going to let his music be used commercially:

It's been 10 years since he set that up nod How do people not know about this?
