Strange Relationship & Trust Cancelled Singles? Others?

I just heard a Shep Pettibone rexmix of Trust and I could swear hearing (at the time) that Trust was going to be a US single... but it never happened

Since Strange Relationship got a remix - it makes we wonder if it was also planned to be a single at some point?

Does anybody know?

And also wondering in which order they were supposed to be released?

Example, was SR supposed to be the single after UGTL? or was there a last minute change, etc

And are there any other cancelled singles?

I'd love to know and thanks very much

Probably after its release on Sign O’ The Times, Prince commissioned Shep Pettibone to remix the song, possibly around the same time he also remixed "Hot Thing." The "1987 Shep Pettibone Club Mix" remained unreleased at the time, but was released on Sign O’ The Times Super Deluxe Edition in 2020. - Princevault

And WTF knows what Prince was thinking at any given moment.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Wasn't Lovesexy supposed to be a single? I remember they were working on a remix in the Paisley Park documentary

yes,it was originally planned as the second single (which would have been a wise choice) but Prince changed his mind and chose "Glam Slam" instead confused

Yep, a New Order remix for Strange Relationship.
Apparently Prince liked that remix more than the Shep remix.

If we're talking about the same 'some guy' then I think he mentioned Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert doing various remixes for SOTT (and albums beyond) commissioned by WB with or without Prince's knowledge.

I would love to hear this

SR mightve just been a bside though
Not an actual single

A Million Days was planned as the second single from Musicology. Radio reception was weak, so it was then shelved and replaced by Call My Name. I was a bit perplexed at the choice of both singles though. I would have picked Dear Mister Man instead.

I think Prince “moved on” from the SOTT album too soon.Yes,we all know that he would always get bored with a project soon after it is released, but I think SOTT had at least 2 more potential singles.I recall a Warner Bros.record exec basically saying the same thing. They wanted more time with this album.

There's The Hot Xperience, a 12" of Hot Wit U remixes.

There's also the Papa EP, a 1993 birthday release including Papa, Come, Peach and Race. I figure out the most different versions here must be Come and Race.

A Milion Days wasn't planned as a (A-Side) single (according to someone who detailed some stuff on this album and told about and showed cancelled singles of other Musicology tracks of which testpressings and promos were made and A Million Days wasn't one of them, but that song and Magnificent were added to a canceled pressing for Life 'O' the Party and a different canceled single release for Cinnamon Girl)
The video for A Milion Days was shot for a NPGMC release that evolved eventually into 3121: The Movie that was canceled.
Cinnamon Girl was the second single from the record not Call My Name.
Call My Name
single (with Silver Tongue) testpressing was made but then shelved and only a promo CD with a edit on it was presented as a single in some countries and was even sold I think only in Canada.

Call My Name was the official second single, it charted like for 27 weeks in the Hot 100. Be it released physically or not, that's not the point.
Since the mid 90's, labels opted to not release systematically every single physically, in order to not cannibalize albums sales.

Betcha By Golly Wow wasn't released physically in the US, but was the obvious lead single from Emancipation.

IIRC, by 1998, singles without physical release were allowed to chart in the hot 100. By 2004, sales counted only for 20% and AirPlay 80%.

Concerning a Million Days, I saw a news from insider source at the time announcing it was to be the second single.

So I don't know if it was ever made official, but at least some people in the knows heard that was Sony plan. Hence the fact a music video was even shot, which proves it. Because you don't shoot a video if you don't intend to use it as a tool to promote a single. That's logical.

Ok, there was no Paisley Park in-house pressings with the track as a 'A-side' and it was used as a 'B-side' for other unreleased singles for Musicology. What Sony had planned doesn't mean much because they also chose Illusion, Coma, Pimp and Circumstance to be released as a single which Prince apparently refused but Sony already planned on there release schedule. (This came from Sony Music Netherlands back when the album was released)
It was confirmed that the video for A Million Days (and others for the album) were shot for a 'video album' on NPGMC not for airplay to promote a single.
So that proves nothing. It's a bit like the Apollonia 6 video album with videos shot for non singles and 'The Hard Life' and 'Parlor Games' movies for Madhouse, all unreleased tho.

Prince shot videos for alot of (even unreleased) tracks so just because he shot a video doesn't mean it was to be a single.

Interesting to know that Sony wanted Coma...initially just after the lead single Musicology. Because in my first listenings of the album, that was my very choice of an obvious 2nd single to pick,

When Musicology (the single) was released Illusion.., A Milion Days, Call My name, Dear Mr man and On the Couch were played alot on some dutch radio stations and I thought all of those would become singles soon only to see no singles arrive and Cinnamon Girl get a single release 6 months after the albums release and the momentum was already gone by then for the album and probably same with Prince's interest in it.

Cinnamon Girl was a heavy rotation video on MTV Europe back in 2004.

What about the Kevin Smith documentary? Half the Vault is video shoots he didn't do anything with.

True there was nothing done in Europe to promote the album
, and no concert at all, no tv performance.
It lacked a European Call My Name to drive the album sales a little.

Musicology was the 1st single, and with the video it was perfect as a lead single. It worked somehow, rhe only problem is that it didn't get massive AirPlay. Too oldschool mayybe.

It got massive airplay in here in the Netherlands and the video was in constant rotation and everywhere on the radio. It never reached the top 40 tho weirdly enough because every non Prince fan I heard mention it loved the track, but I guess no one bought it.

Ironically, it was never really a proper "single" in the "old school" sense.

i was actually expecting that there would be a 12"/maxi single with an extended version.

In the Netherlands, it stayed 7 weeks in the top 100 and peaked at #32 in its 4th week, so it had legs.
And why would people buy the single ? The b-side was the terrible On The Couch already on the album !
Dutch are smart people and preferred buying the album : it spent the 7 weeks of the single charting, in the top 10 album.
So Musicology the single clearly sold the album ( which would spend 30 more discountinuous weeks in the top 100).

So many of my peers clowned hard on lame "Musicology" back in high school. Track was so whack/lame.

Prince was kind of clever titling his albums and especially here tours after title tracks. It causes all these pavolvian responses where it's like this subconscious game of telephone. "I like 'Musicology'! (the tour) What a fantastic comeback! (the tour) '"Musicology'" truly represents a Prince return-to-form (the.. song?) Everyone loves "Musicology" (wait, er did we love the tour or the song or...) Yep, you gotta rank 'Musicology' near the top of his works as a result. (the... album?)"

Like literally people have conflated a love of the tour era into a love of a lame album and even lamer lead single title track. Now Prince fans all over discuss what a "classic" era this is amongst the best when it's literally among his worst outside the albeit damn solid tour.
