1999 vs Purple Rain cd - which is your fave? I listened to this for the first time in a while and loved it, from the pimp funk rock classics Lady cab Driver and All the critics, to the passion of LRC and all the other funk classics on there. For my money at this point i prefer it to P.Rain and see it as equally ground breaking. What about you?.

1999 by a landslide. You don't even have to ask. Don't make me bust out some old threads.

Almost equal, but I go for 1999 by a hair. I think they're both perfect at what they're trying to accomplish.

Eventough the title track is the one Prince song I hate
above anything else [yes, I'd rather listen to Justin Timberlake pissing in my coffee], I still have to go for "1999" as my fav. It's such a fun record, even after all these years. The grooves are astounding. A whole album filled with "extended" Prince tunes. Who could say 'no'?? and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

No messin' with the title track- it's sheer brilliance- the song that got me into music- period!

I'm very sorry but I just don't understand what's so special about it. In fact, I just don't like it at all. And there are only a handfull of Prince tunes out of the odd 600 that I absolutely don't like. Than again, who knows what might happen. I used to get sick whenever I heard LittleRedCorvette. But just the other month I listened to it again in the middle of the night, working at the computer and finally, after 16 years of having had the album, the song got to me. I love it now. But still, I don't think that will ever happen with 1999. I did like the reggae version on TheNewMaster though... K*I*D*D*I*N*G and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

1999 is one of Prince's best cd's. I like PR, but I'd listen to 1999 over PR.

Purple Rain...even though I love 1999, it doesn't flow quite as well as Purple Rain for me. 1999 loses some gas towards the end but Purple Rain is strong from beginning to end imo. The one thing that is missing from PR is the long version of Computer Blue.

i have a theory that i discussed with a Journalist freind, who was doing a retrospective, on 1999 vs PR.
It should be Purple Rain - it was more concise, was easy to listen to without skipping a track and had a better songwriting angle (more songs are simply great songs that had a universal appeal, as opposed to genre heavy songs) BUT, 1999 seems to edge it for most who own both. I think this is because PR is just a tad too polished in the mix. I heard a bootleg of Computer Blue (the extended one) and i went bezerk. it's dirty, frantic and doesn't seem to want to stop - without feeling too long. The early versions of Let's Go Crazy and Beatiful ones are the same. very LiVE sounding. But i think songs got shortend and the mix got cleaner when they mastered it. That's why 1999 clinches it. DMSR, Automatic, 1999, little Red, etc, they all keep their dirrty, raw, rough appeal. the funk doesn't get stankier. that's why for me, and others i've talked to, it makes 1999 the better album.

Purple Rain is brilliant in every way, every time I hear it, it just sounds more perfect. 1999 is great, but not as immediately powerful as Purple Rain. Personally . I think we are all Boring with No Lives cause all we do is talk about Prince,Criticize and Gossip. I need a Horny Man is what I Need and probably so do most of yas. 1 and 1A...
Purple Rain is the BEST CD of all time...IMO. It took me years to fully appreciate 1999, but now, it is 1A... I sort of agree with IstenSzek...the title track is getting harder to listen to for me...and almost impossible to dance to...maybe i've heard it too much, since it's one of the few Prince songs that is played at EVERY wedding reception. Maybe it'll come back around for me in the end. Maybe not. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.
