Gospel Group covers Purple Rain

Gospel group Sainted lost out on a previous appearance on America's Got Talent. But in their recent Wildcard edition of the show, Simon Cowell pulled them back.

Cowell and producers battled and bargained with the Prince Estate to get clearance for "Purple Rain," something that never happens. But it did this time. And it paid off.

Watch the video to see and hear an amazing vocal arrangement of the song.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Very good.
One of the best versions.
Not an obv prince song for a gospel choir either!
Wonder if a gospel artist has covered the cross.

Starts really well, but a bit odd, for a Gospel song, that they skipped the "let the Lord guide you..." part... and started singing "Purple Rain" again to a fairly different tune at the end... Seemed like they couldn't quite make a new arrangement work.

In these shows they always have to skip parts to make it shorter
But pr is a lyrically odd song that changes focus verse to verse so hey im not sure it matters
But shortening it does mean you miss that build up which it needs

Well, the original lyric doesn't contain that reference, so....

OK. Pedantic.

I watched the performance several times, gave me chills every time.

I didn't even think about the "Let The Lord Guide You" line, because in my mind that is not an official line of the song. Could go either way on that one . . .

Just like in the song Kiss, where he changes the Dynasty line over and over . . . I don't consider "Sex And The City" to be canon.

For me, the performance was special - in part - because of the gospel in-between chords. You can transition back to the first chord by doing a 2-5 transition. (What we called it.) You take the 2nd and 5th note in your base chord, and use it as a transition back.

A G chord is G-B-D. The 2nd is A, and the 5th is D. So you'd play Aminor-Dmajor to bring you back to G. It's sorta that, maybe with a 7th or a 4th thrown in. Something that gives it that warm, comfy transition between sections. It worked its way into the vocal arrangement too.

Also, the other thing was the soloist really sorta mimicking the initial guitar solo line. She was phenomenal.
