Man, I love that guitar sound. "The Question of U" is insane.
The Estate could easily release multiple releases like this (rehearsals, jams, etc.) each year. As is. Take them from audio cassettes. Minimal remastering. Minimal promotion. Preferably online only.

having this one in complete form would have been cool, apparenty it's missing alot of People Without.

Thanks! Looking forward to listening to this. I notice the track list is similar to, but slightly different from, the upcoming Purple Underground release (vol. 9, I think?). Does anyone happen to know how the actual content may differ, if at all?
The PU release appears to have 13 tracks (including 9:48 of Prince "joking around"), whereas this leak has 9. ("The Question of U" appears as 3 tracks on the PU release, which may be consolidated here.) But also, the running order for both appears to differ as well. |

Yes, but: no... what would be the use of a mediocre sounding official streaming/download release? There are enough bootlegs in this quality floating around. I want proper records!!
Mix it, master it, nice artwork, official physical product. It is woth it and it is worth the wait, I guess. I hope the estate can handle one SDE plus 2-3 more releases a year: live albums, rehearsals, Aftershow Gigs etc. which didn't find their way on the SDEs. I missed so much on the SOTT and D+P SDEs... |

I see what you mean, but "properly" mixing (if the multitracks are available), mastering, packaging, etc. costs money. And I'd rather have something than nothing. Bootlegs are often incomplete and subpar sound quality wise. So, yes, absolutely, we need more "proper" releases. But we could have even more releases if we accept that not everything needs to be released on vinyl with 100-page booklets.

If you don't want bootlegs with subpar sound quality, you NEED to mix and master the original analog tapes - and yes, this is very complex and very expensive.
Because there is no market for downlaods anymore and you can't earn enough with streaming alone recouping your costs, the only way to make any money out of it is physical products. No problem for me! |

Do you know how much such an mix & master exercise would cost? Let us say remaster 200 tracks (I suppose there is economies of scale, so remastering 10-15 shows would be a good set-up).
Rough figures are sufficient
I wonder if one could get a crowd financing organised for this - so the estate could either raise the money on its own, or some cool entrepreneur could try to license this from the estate... |

With discs available for purchase should people want them. It'd buy them some goodwill, and there is so SO much live material that will never be released, not at their current rate anyway. But I guess there is Purple Purple Rain toilet paper that needs to be given priority. |
