It cant be exactly the same And it shouldn't be Its dated for one thing, badly dated actually If its just a recreation of the film it would serve no one Im sure the setting will remain the 80s, doesnt mean eveything has to remain the same Ultimately though the film is no masterpiece Its got a few good scenes but the performances are what make it So a reinvention of that story would be no bad thing No one NEEDS to see a woman thrown into a dumpster for instance
but do we really wanna see a watered down version of the Morris Day character? His pimp-like attitude was part of his whole image/persona.Him having Jerome throw that lady in the dumpster was one of the funniest scenes.

Don't want watered down scenes! That would ruin the whole show. The dumpster scene is hilarious and underscores what a jerk the Morris Day character is. lol

Characters like Morris are eaten up in Broadway shows. People love those over-the-top, big personality characters. They tend to get the greatest applause (next to the actual lead).

There are too many EXCELLENT broadway shows to learn from for them to mess this up. (Never say, never -- I know. lol)

I think that an actor around Prince's age at the time of Purple Rain (or a little younger) would work well. Not some 35 year old.

We can count on a few things being changed, that's the nature of the theater experience. They freshen things up a bit based on the audience tastes. Hopefully it be plot-based, not agenda-based.

I'm looking forward to it. I think they have more than enough material to make it great.

If Prince can make a great shell of a theater musical with Sign O The Times, a real theater production could be epic.

Exactly.

yeahthat

I LOVE Purple Rain; the album, the movie, saw the tour twice.

.

.

But having read about this in the article and the playwright, it sounds like it's going to be AWFUL.

This take should be thrown in the dumpster. lol

Im happy for Morris to stay a jerk/hilarious. Thats what made him such a scene stealer. But to listen to some of the comments, its like you want it preserved in amber and not a word changed lol. Thats like saying when prince covered hendrixs red house, he should have made it sound like the late 60s perfectly. Thats not how remakes work...

I think this is good. The original movie was offensive and not suitable for any audience. The album, too. Hopefully they will complete rewrite the film (and hopefully the songs too!) to be more inclusive and caring towards modern audiences. In this way, Prince will be redeemed.

Should they stick with the Purple Rain songs only,or use this as an opportunity to throw in a few other songs? For example,a song like “Moonbeam Levels” might work extremely well in a big stage musical hmmm

^^That's a good question. Maybe throw "The Dance Electric" and "Erotic City" in there too? I see a lot of my students wearing "PR" t shirts and hoodies. I wonder if they'll re-write the play to be more "family friendly"..so the parents can bring their kids...(?)

They'll include one exclusive Vault track so everyone buys the same material for the 9th time.

I’ve just seen the film Wonka with the kids, which I was surprised was really great as a musical and was done really well. I’m all for authenticity but if they reinterpret Purple Rain as a great musical stage show, it could potentially properly reignite things for Prince, even allowing Warners to do a remake of the film. Let’s just wait and see with the stage show and I hope it’s a huge success.
There may or may not be something coming!

Probably best to find a young up-and-comer, but if Anthony Ramos wanted to do it, I wouldn't mind. Not sure if he's got the pipes for it, despite his Broadway pedigree (Hamilton; more of a rapping role? I haven't seen it).

He's in his early 30s.

Anthony Ramos was really good in the In The Heights movie, but I can't see him playing Prince biggrin

Cash grab for the most pedestrian fanbase. I'll probably go see it anyway because I'm an addict. I hope it doesn't suck. But it probably will. Maybe the cast will perform Computer Blue at the Thanksgiving parade next year. Maybe we will get some cool merch outta the deal.

Wow! Just wanted come on here and say I'm really surprised and happy that there aren't really any negative comments about the stageplay. All the other forums have been terrible. I still want 2 see a play, but I wanted to done right out of respect for Prince and his legacy!

Purple Rain 40 in 2024!

This is definately a negative comment.

Here's another negative comment for the pile. And I worked in musical theatre for years, it's what I went to school for. Purple Rain exists, people can watch it anytime. Why would you spend your money to go and see 'Ed Fliegelberg' or whoever pretending to be Prince?

Yeah the difference between this and other productions is Purple Rain is literally already a musical.

I'd maybe be in favor of something original that encompassed different eras of Prince (like what about something about a Prince fan or a dreamer character coming-of-age with Prince, to Prince), but otherwise this is the usual spamming of Purple Rain like nothing he ever did around it ever mattered.

Exactly.

I say this an ABBA fan old enough to have seen them live in the concert that was in ABBA the Movie: Mamma Mia is a self indulgent blight on humanity, but I am excited about the potential for a Purple Rain musical. A key reason is that it was written to be one.

There are so many musical threatre productions that keep coming back with new casts, new formats and variations. Many of these have live and stage versions. As Prince plays The Kid and not himself, the lead would be not be pretending to be Prince.

lol at everyone saying this will suck before even seeing it.

im cautious as im not sure prince was killing it when he tried to make his own stage productions in the 90s, but maybe someone else could do a better job of it. its prince too, so i imagine it will be a little different to most musicals like this, hopefully.

it could be cool.

That's why I can picture Anthony Ramos in the role. They don't need a Prince impression.
