The musical should NOT be about Prince, but about The Kid. Avoid making this a bio pic featuring a fake Prince. Make it about the characters but with Prince music of course. Come up with surprising orchestration.

If you’ve seen Cory Henry channel Prince in his Purple Rain tribute without mimicking the man in any way, you know what I mean.
I have seen good imitations of Prince, but they always end up singing in Uncanny Valley.

I have spoken. 😁

Boydie

I think this is a good way to play it as it doesn't necessarily need to be a Prince lookalike/soundalike - the Kid is a character in its own right, so could in theory be played by anyone

I thnik this could be great - and could attract a whole new audience to Prince. Cheesy storyline, great music, some underlying familiarity with the songs - if done right, this could be a huge smash hit on Broadway... not sure about the Lake Minetonka scene but hey biggrin

Oh boy, I can't wait for the sanitized modern musical theater version of this classic album! This is definitely what Prince fans with disposable income want in lieu of more unreleased sets! Thank you so much McMillan!

It's not a zero sum game. We can get both.

Jacobs-Jenkins’ book will be based on the original screenplay by Albert Magnoli (who also directed the film) and William Blinn.

wonder what the book will be.

In musical theatre, the 'book' just means the script, minus the lyrics of the musical numbers.

There's an article in the New Yorker Magaine describing how the story and characters are being updated for a modern audience.

Here's a link, but it's paywalled:

Did anyone take a look at this article?

According to it, the Kid is "changed most of all, from a seductively inscrutible and mercuriable figure to a more vulnerable young artist." When The Kid sings 'Darling Nikki' to Apollonia to denounce her for joining Morris's band, social media will fault him for slut shaming her and try to cancel him.

It also says Morris comes onto Apollonia by suggesting that "she might have a future focussing on women's empowerment issues at his media company."

This will be good. Broadway is a lot of fun, and the production is impressive these days. Can't wait to see the casting of Morris, Apollonia, Billy sparks and of course the Kid.

Doing puzzles in a magazine. She said how'd you like to eat some tofu and I could not resist when I saw little Nikki do Sudoku.

.

To me this seems dumb as a box of rocks and I am dreading the morning news commercials with some wannabe doing the ow.

Cedric The Entertainer should be Billy. I think he could do that role quite well.

For roles like Morris or Apollonia, they need to find young fresh faces. These people were in their mid-20s allegedly playing younger roles. They were all like Andrea on 90210. Get a real 18 or 19 year old in there, give it that younger edge. It juxtaposes better against an older type like Billy, the mom and dad, the cops, whoever.

I sorta wonder if they'll incorporate stuff from the scrip that was left out, not shot, or cut. (Like literally half the trailer.)

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Casting The Time might be more tricky than the Kid!
.
And I wonder if they’ll use original Prince music, with a new actor singing live, or create more “theatrical” versions of all the songs!?
.
Either way… sounds like a bad idea! biggrin

They should definately use ALL the stuff left out, leave the original movie alone and call it something else without Prince's name involved biggrin

Nobody reads or buys magazines anymore,

So change it to,

I knew a girl named Nikki
I guess you could say she was a sex fiend
I met her in a hotel lobby
Fapping off to an internet fanzine
There may or may not be something coming!

"Updated for a modern audience"? confused see, that's the thing....I don't want them to "update" things too much. The original movie and story took place in the 80s.Let's keep it there.

It cant be exactly the same
And it shouldn't be
Its dated for one thing, badly dated actually
If its just a recreation of the film it would serve no one
Im sure the setting will remain the 80s, doesnt mean eveything has to remain the same
Ultimately though the film is no masterpiece
Its got a few good scenes but the performances are what make it
So a reinvention of that story would be no bad thing
No one NEEDS to see a woman thrown into a dumpster for instance

I thought this was s good idea until I read "the story and characters are being updated for a modern audience". Its not Purple Rain anymore if there's too many unnecessary changes.

but do we really wanna see a watered down version of the Morris Day character? His pimp-like attitude was part of his whole image/persona.Him having Jerome throw that lady in the dumpster was one of the funniest scenes.

We've been over this, but the ENTIRE movie is about the Kid rejecting his father's attitude toward women/his mother. Morris is another example of the misogyny in his life that he must reject to become a better person. This is played out in how he treats Apollonia and Wendy & Lisa.

Morris being a dick is an important part of the plot.

Tis is quite what I expected for the 40 years PR anniversary. No SDE Edition of the album, but a Broadway show. I don't care about it, I hate musicals wink hopefully we will get some other real Prince releases this year.... Parade Deluxe I am waiting wink

What a total let down!

The Angelsax world love Broadway musicals 'n shit.

Me (as a European) don't like it at all.

They can't sing, except for too loud singing, and way too ariculated.

Worst choice ever to cash-in on Prince's legacy, knowing this; "Don't Play Me!".

But, is this a hint for the PR SDE to be the fat goose of this year?

Let's hope so...

I've also seen people claim the movie was homophobic because of Morris using the f-slur, when it was obviously meant to show what an asshole his character was and wasn't actually used against any queer characters as a joke
