SOTT Photo shoot

Pitchfork's nice article about SOTT photoshoot.

Actually things most of us know already.

But for those who don't... just sayin'.

I think I remember reading this when it came out in 2020. The thing about the blurry face photo as the cover had me giggling. It felt like a very Prince moment.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Brilliant cover.

For me this was/ still is a true art statement by Prince & Katz.

Still the best cover of all his albums to me.

It so much fits the whole vibe of the album.

How fantastic it was that Karen Krattinger went to the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre to get this backdrop.... How come she found that one?

I still love it, it never gets old.

I wonder, did they tour with that original backdrop all the time?

Or had they made multiple copies?

Was it ever exposed at Pailsey Park?

The tour didn't have a backdrop. The idea of it was clearly recreated. Did you see the tour? Fabric backdrops in 1987 did not light up. Some guy on Flickr and other places had one of the light up signs from the actual tour and was trying to sell it. I offered him money for it and he scoffed. I have no idea what he wanted for it ultimately.

To borrow something from a company or a theatre isn't a new idea. So to snag it for a shoot then bring it back isn't unusual at all. I can't think that Karen was just out there working at Target, then ended up as Prince's assistant one day. She had to have known folks (as we all do) that worked in various fields, including theatre, or at least had the wherewithal in her head to think, "Let's see what they've got over there."

I've seen shows of the SOTT tour in Belgium, Holland, Germany and France. Four times in total. biggrin I was a big big fan by then.

Yeah you're right, Of course I remember the neon lights and all, they obviously were added.

Anyway, they must've made replica(s) for the tour obviously.

I only wonder, did Prince buy this fantastic backdrop?

Payd royalties to the designer of it?

Is the original one still in Palsley Park?

I think it would just be cool to see the original one being exposed in PP for example.

I love this cover.
I dont like the sde cover though as i think it negates what made the original cover so good. Ie not having prince front and centre or not having his image so clear.
Im still unsure anyone needs quite so many of all the other shots in the book.
Great piece though.
Laura lipuma is also really important, just as key to what made katz' photos so good/evocative in the 80s.
I loved the piece on her on the current website.

They sold some (maybe all) of the tour signs at the garage sale.

Off topic, well, off.... since 1987, I still have this cut out life size Cat holding that big black heart up, as a promo stand for the new SOTT and La La La, He He Hee. It's till in pristine quality,

and I would NEVER get rid of it. smile
