The album he was born to make

"The album he was born to make" tagline was given to Emancipation, but I don't think it was well deserved. Which one album would you give this to?
I would give it to Dirty Mind. Not because it was his best, but because that's the album he told the world he was not just going to play it safe with another For You or self-titled rated PG softball follow-up.
Runner up would be Crystal Ball/SOTT due to the organic feel and unbelievable level of output.
Ancient Egyptians postulated 7 souls.
Top soul, and the first to leave at the moment of death, is Ren, the secret name...

He was born to make music.

That tagline is simply because he was out of his record contract. He was born to make music as a free agent. We get it, but it was corny.

He was born to channel music from some otherworldly place. And he did that every time he sat down to play and record.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

For you,Emancipation and Dirty mind do have a very personal feeling involved with identity, like they are saying this is me and hee is my work.

This.

This is corny as well, but I would say he was born to play every note he played in his life, in the sense that there was an intentionality behind everything he did that I haven't witnessed in many other artists. That was not always a guarantee of artistic quality, of course, but on average it made his musical output worthy of interest even on his worst days.

Sign O The Times is a good sample of Prince at his best. Even the lyrics were better than usual.

Well, Prince himself said it about Emancipation, so to him, it was the album he was born to make. Regardless of how any of us feel, in his mind, he believed that.

Fenwick and I were going over Emancipation today, and the fluff on it. We wanted to pick the very best songs (for us) to make one CD. Yes, I know, the eternal debate. Why cut up Prince's stuff? Well because some of it isn't great.

This is what we came up with (although he protests "Damned If eye Do, and I'm protesting him for it).

  1. Damned If I Do
  2. Right Back Here In My Arms
  3. Somebody’s Somebody (Livestudio Mix)
  4. Emale
  5. Get Yo Groove On (Edit)
  6. Courtin’ Time
  7. One Of Us
  8. Saviour
  9. Sleep Around (Edit)
  10. White Mansion
  11. One Kiss At A Time
  12. In This Bed I Scream
  13. Soul Sanctuary
  14. The Love We Make
  15. My Computer

I divided it into two sets of songs, one 8 and one 7 (however it would work out) and played with Side A and Side B ideology, instead of one long CD. So "Sleep Around" started Side B. I wanted "My Computer" to end it since it's the AOL sound saying "Goodbye."

Giving it a test run now.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

his name change was meant to signal a rebirth.

ie the birth of something new.

reborn to make something he couldnt make before.

ie emancipation.

another day, another new emancipation sequence.

Um, that whole campaigne was full of gimmicks.

Don't get me wrong, the music was great!!!

i couldn't possibly put just one album under that moniker, as Prince couldn't've either lol

Yeah, that version of Emancipation sucks. You've left out most of the albums strongest cuts. The Holy River, Face Down, New World, Friend Lover Sister Mother Wife and Joint 2 Joint are all better songs than three quarters of your list.

I don't believe "New World" is a strong song, at all. "Slave," "Human Body," and "New World" are cheap ass attempts at ...well, something. THey don't work for me. Never did, and I believe their lead in for disk 3 is why I never fancied that disk much at all.

"Face Down" is fine, but I was going for a mood on this one.

I agree that "Friend Lover" could work in here somewhere but I debated on that and "Saviour," and the latter was just a stronger song. I like the uplifting nature of it, too. It sorta tied in with "One Of Us," having a god-moment there. And I didn't wanna have too-too many ballads.

"The Holy River" feels schmaltzy to me until the guitar solo. It's too long, feels like a grab at "Purple Rain" or "Gold." Doesn't cut it. And I have those gospelesque moments represented already.

"Joint 2 Joint" is a noise fest and messy AF for me. The tap dancing is unusual, but also unnecessary. The rap is unnecessary, too. It feels more hodge-podge than well-thought out. Maybe if I cut out those two elements, it'd feel more cohesive or something. I dont know, it's just an odd track for me.

Of course - like I said and everyone else - it's the neverending battle of what is the best 1-disk version. haha

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
