Diamonds & Pearls Dolby Atmos mix

Thought I'd start a new thread for this as it's a complete reinterpretation of D&P that is being sold separately from the deluxe box set - not to be confused with the vanilla remastered version. Chris James has truly excelled himself here - invest in compatible headphones or speakers and treat your ears, folks.

Thunder, Daddy Pop, Walk Don't Walk, Jughead, Push and Live 4 Love sound reinvented to these ears ... bold remixing but, for me (and some will vehemently disagree) still respectful to the original masters. That 90s 'sheen' is pretty much gone. It's D&P reimagined. Don't underestimate how much work has gone into this. The rhythm guitar in Push could take someone's head off now... Live For Love never really hit for me, was too over-produced, campy ... this is quite an extraordinary interpretation of how it should have perhaps originally sounded if the technology had been available.

just to be clear: this is not available yet, this is something you got to preview, so you can write a review about it, right?

I realised I have compatible headphones, so I'm looking forward to it smile

No, I only had the remaster before - the Dolby Atmos mix was released on Apple Music today. Enjoy!

Just type in Diamonds and Pearls deluxe - you'll see the 'Dolby Atmos' under the album cover. Plug in the headphones and play. smile

wherever I look, no dolby atmos under the cover. I guess you have to be a paying member.
so I tried to subscribe but it keeps telling me something went wrong and to try again later.

typical new prince release day lol

I'll try again later. For now I'll just enjoy the normal remaster, which also sounds good.

You listen to Live for Love yet? It always seemed 'flat' to me, a big production that collapsed under its own weight... but Chris has given each element space to exist in the Atmos mix. It sounds absolutely huge, widescreen, panoramic - but without pomposity or pretension. It's the fucking iMax after the Betamax. The guitar solo at the end sounds like it's burning in hell.

Going to listen to it now. I tought Thunder also sounded a lot more spacious, with a lot more
room for each element, yet a nice clarity to it as well.

By the way is it me or is there a miniscule glitch in Gett Off between 14.5/16 seconds?

Because of this blu ray audio release, I actually upgraded my surround receiver to a new ATMOS capable unit. I am in the middle of setting it up with ceiling speakers. It took a Prince release like this one to get me to upgrade after 20 years:)

Is there any details mixed for the ceiling speakers?

I just have a good pair of atmos compatible headphones so I don't know, really.

Never got into atmos until now. Didn't even know my gear supported such.

The things we figure out for prince music. lol

P whispers 'kill them all' repeatedly over every track from the Atmos ceiling speakers - except for Insatiable and Tony's raps.

Totally ... this is a highly unexpected experience. You can hear absolutely every single thing in the mix, like you're standing in the centure of the stage as the band plays in front of and behind you (and above and below!). Gett Off is the furthest removed from its original version I think - all the compression is gone and various elements have been mixed forward/backwards. Wasn't sure at first but it was just the shock of the new - fucking love it, sounds absolutely explosive and drippingly sexual. Walk Don't Walk sounds psychedelic, trippy as hell.

Jughead, somehow, now has the dark manic energy of Superfunkycali... these multitracked rhythm guitars being so prominent in the mix gives the song in an entirely new dynamic and sense of purpose.

yup! that's what I was feeling too, as if you're in the room with them performing it.

I had to skip Gett Off the first 2 times I tried, it was a bit overwhelming smile

Now I'm going through the slower songs. Willing & Able and Instiable sound pretty
amazing too.

I listened to Jughead 3 times in a row because I could not believe my ears falloff

Ok, gonna go dive into Gett Off now. cool

I was actually dancing to Jughead and Push. lol I love love love the dark edge Jughead gets here.

Oh my Gett Off, I'm once again hearing things I never heard before. Jeez I'm loving this experience.

Who knew that the most exciting thing about D&P remastered could be the actual album itself eek

Listen to the backing vocals on the chorus of Money Don't Matter. There's incredible high falsetto harmonies that were completely buried in the original mix.

give me a minute, I'm listening to Jughead again lol

and I'm loving what this mix does for "Walk Don't Walk", it's always been one of my favorits
on the album but it sounded so flat. not anymore smile

Absolutely ... what a surprise. Push now sounds like an absolute monster NPG in mass attack Symbol/GN jam ... but that 'They call me Rosie G and I just don't care' line still makes my balls retract.

Indeed, "Money Don't Matter 2Nite" has some very nice little things in the mix
that never stood out in the original album mix. It's brighter now, and it seems
almost as if it's not quite as slow and 'droning' as it used to be. It used to bore
me a bit but it doesn't now. In fact, I was shocked it was already over when it
was.

Anyway, I have to go to bed now, i'm already 2 hours past my time lol I just
can't stop listening. One last Live 4 Love and that's it for today.

Cheers! Have a good one guys!
