Thank you, Rod! I appreciate the effort you put in your breakdown of the numbers. Any ideas how D&P stacks up to 1999 release? Even though Diamonds and Pearls was big when it was first released, I still figured this release wouldn't be as big as the previous ones since the '80s are generally considered his most prolific and creative. Thanks again.
IIRC, 1999 SDE sold like 15k copies in the US the 1st week, peaking at #45. SOTT SDE did better, but it had better arguments. When you look at the Spotify numbers : SOTT ( the album) has 123 millions streams SOTT SDE has 134 M streams. Which means the 50 like unreleased tracks in 3 years generated only 11 M streams. Which means in term of money : 11,000 dollars. All these efforts for that... Diamonds and Pearls : 103 Millions It s not that far from SOTT...So it shows that it s all about the way you promote, sell your business. Lovesymbol : 45 Millions streams. So it seems highly unlikely this SDE ever get to be released. The biggest album on Spotify that hasn't got the SDE treatment yet is by far Parade (420 M) Then Around The World at 240 M Then Prince at 100 M. [Edited 11/22/23 16:45pm] [Edited 11/22/23 16:45pm]

About those numbers:

"SOTT ( the album) has 123 millions streams
SOTT SDE has 134 M streams.
Which means the 50 like unreleased tracks in 3 years generated only 11 M streams. Which means in term of money : 11,000 dollars. All these efforts for that..."

How does that work exactly? Whenever someone listens to a song, it means one more "stream" for the associated album?

In that case, how can we know which songs have been streamed from the SOTT SDE? How do we know most of those 134M streams do not come from the vault/live tracks?

Also: if 10M streams = 10K USD, then 100M streams = 100K USD. That's not much either. It barely covers the yearly salary of one person. According to that logic, why release anything new?

SOTT ( album) = 123 millions streams
SOTT SDE = SOTT ( album) + the vault tracks = 123 M+ 11 M = 134 M

They just need to focus on the hardcore fans and release 3 or 4 Vault releases every year. Forget about high figures and just do what Zappa's Estate is doing. Only PR40 will do great in charts.

The SDE's are for the hardcore fans though.

This website, which the Prince section was written in 2018 :

https://chartmasters.org/...-analysis/

Though some numbers seem odd and quite out of place, like the physical singles sales.

Let s take a look at the physical singles sales from D&P listed there:

Thunder – 20,000
Diamonds and Pearls – 1,280,000
Cream – 1,110,000
Gett Off – 1,140,000
Money Don’t Matter 2 Night – 240,000
Insatiable – 180,000

Insatiable is listed at 180k, whereas it was only released in the US ( am I wrong?) and was recorded by Soundscan at 124k copies. Soundscan system was thriving at the time, since it was created in 1991. Surely there was a 10% mistake rate, but that doesn't add up to 180k

Cream and Gett Off would have sold only 600k outside the US, but D&P more 800k ? D&P did great in the US (429k, didn't reach the Gold certification), but it still did less than Cream (491k, certified Gold) and Gett Off ( 551k).

D&P didn't do that great outside the US though :
Canada : #5
Australia : #13
New Zealand : #8
Europe : #29, reaching top ten only in Switzerland

Money Don't Matter 2Night would have sold only 100k outside the US ?

It didn't do that less than D&P. In fact, it charted a bit higher in Europe (#24), though for less weeks). It went top ten in Netherlands and Ireland.
Australia : #18
New Zealand : #20
Canada : #19

For the record, Thunder was by far the best selling single of the whole D&P project in Ireland (!). It peaked at #3 and charted for 12 weeks

Most popular D&P songs on Spotify, among Prince' whole catalogue :

#11 Cream 33,676,695
#13 Diamonds and Pearls 27,310,507
#28 Gett Off 15,123,395
#34 Money Don't Matter 2 Night 12,686,712
#38 Insatiable 11,421,777
#139 Strollin' 1,586,218
#140 Thunder 1,584,535
#174 Willing and Able

Some analyses here :

- Obviously, the most streamed tracks are the ones that were released/ promoted as the singles : Strollin' had a video and was double A-sided with Sexy MF, Willing has a video , tv live performances, and was announced as a single.

- overall poor numbers. You would have thought Cream was a 100 millions song
.
- good performance for Insatiable, since it s not on any best-of. It beats I Feel For You (#39), Partyman (#40), Do Me Baby (#41), Alphabet Street (!) (#44), Batdance (!!) #45...

Any updates on sales or has the SDE effectively fallen off a cliff in sales terms? Since that seems to be the case, with the SDE and other associated D&P re-releases barely selling 100,000 altogether, and streaming of Prince bringing in next to nothing, is some kind of tour experience like ABBA, the estate’s likely only hope to make money. Taylor Swift tour seems to make a packet, but also that ABBA thing has been continually successful. I think in the next few years, some kind of Prince avatar type tour show will be developed, perhaps supported by live ex-band mates, like that Celebration event with the NPG playing along to a show.
There may or may not be something coming!

I just updated the 1st post, adding a 4th and last week for Japan, and a few more countries.
It clearly didn't launch a D&P Revival.

I don't have individual numbers for tracks under 100,000 streams.
Who listens to live tracks on streaming by the way?

Most streamed tracks from the Vault/ b-sides, ranked in the whole Prince catalogue :

#295 Alice Through The Looking Glass : 559,348
#353 Cream Take 2 : 425,345
#390 Gett Off House style :359,733
#439 Violet The organgrinder : 273,179

Nothing D&P related but, since it's the day of Christmas, I noticed that Prince only Christmas-track " Lonely Christmas" had a boost these days : it goes from a usual 2,500 streams per days, to 6,000 yesterday biggrin

Almost every major artist has a Christmas song that is one of his best streaming song. These songs were usually not a smash hit at the time of the release but nowadays with legal downloads and streaming, these are becoming really all time hits.

A few instances here from Spotify :

- Paul McCartney : Wonderful Christmas Time (471 millions streams, his only track above is...4-5seconds in which he doesn't even sing nor produce)

- Stevie Wonder's "What Christmas Means To Me" ranks #7 in his tracks, above Isn't She Lovely.

- John Lennon's "Happy X-Mas" is only now a few steps behind Imagine, as his top streaming song. It will beat it one day eventually...

- 9 songs out of the top 20 best streamed songs of the Jackson 5 are Christmas songs ! The most famous one, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, is one of the lost enduring hit of Michael Jackson whole carreer.

The more the years are passing, the more the best streaming songs of an artist will tend to be a Christmas song !

Of course,George Michael/ Wham Last Christmas,is gonna be one day the most streaming song ever. Unbeatable.

Maybe one day the new estate will promote songs like The Last December or Lonely Christmas. They have more potential money to make than in another D&P SDE-like !

D&P:SDE didn't get my money, mostly because I feel it's priced way too high. I feel that these SDEs should max out at $100 . . . maybe $120.

I bought the original on CD and cassette back when it came out in 1991, I'm good for now. If the SDE drops below $100, I might grab it.

I agree but, 120$ or 150$, what's the difference when you are a fan?
Take it as it is, every two or three years, you won't get anything else.

Yeah. They could re-release the song specially for Christmas.
Maybe there’s a demo somewhere of the track, who knows… Or another Christmas song we’ve never heard off…. Just imagine. wink
)
Combine this tracks with 4 The Tears In Your Eyes, and Free. And you have a nice Princemas package EP.
-
Wham! Deserves the Christmas trophy.

Thank you once again for your effort. Appreciate it very much.
Gives a pretty good view on how things are financially.
Actually I am surprised Gett Off is the number one RSD release.
There are still a few of these available here in Belgium in some record stores.

These numbers probably scare the Estate slightly.
They probably expected the same numbers as SOTT, because they know it’ll probably be the same set of fans buying… but they didn’t turn up for D&P.
So… what next?

I’d assume that’s also up to Warner and Sony, and what their budget is for promotion.
They got a fair bit of press, but these aren’t really going to appeal much further than hardcore fans who already know about it.
So it’s really important the content is good enough…
.
I’m not sure why hardcore fans haven’t bought D&P SDE… other than the cost of course!

You are all welcome !

To answer to Love2thenines, I don't see D&P above the 50k mark.
The SOTT Sde had more legs than that, and it was priced more expensively.

I agree with MIRvmn1. The estate could have had a biggest marketing plan than that.
They also could have announced the Lovesymbol to come shortly, an exclusive CD with all the remixes missing from the SDE...

Same thing for SOTT Sde. They could have released some companions albums to make the release still visible and make some noises about it : Crystal Ball, the Camille album...

Probably a few more factors at play . . . even $120 is not in my personal budget at the moment. Something more like the 1999:SDE price when it came out would be. And, I can listen to it whenever on Spotify.

As I stated, I think a set of this kind should max out at $100 (for the CDs.). Sales would be higher, more units sold.
