the estate should use the joni mitchell archive releases as a model

I know they wont as big sde releases including reselling old albums seems to be where the money is (new money for old rope etc) but id love if now that the biggest selling albums are out the way, they just do a straightforward archive program. Joni mitchells current archive series (demos, live songs, early versions of songs, basically giving you both alternate versions, as well as a peek into how her songs developed over time) looks like a great, orderly way to do it. And doing it this way would allow for more actual vault tracks and live material, as well.

This is the latest one, focusing on the period prince was a big fan of.

I saw that set in a record store last weekend and I couldn't help but wish that Prince's estate would do the same thing. Her vault series, along with Bob Dylan's, Frank Zappa's, The Rolling Stones',etc. should give the estate some template on how Prince's archives can be released to make everyone happy, while still being profitable for the estate.

Not to forget Neil Young's gigantic output,

Pearl Jam's,

Bruce Springsteen's

Even Elton John's....

All great packages.

The Bowie sets are a great way of re-releasing older material. There isn't much in the way of unreleased stuff in the sets aside from some of the reimagined albums and live sets but for an album collection they're great (though the sets do leave off his first album and the release campaign appears to have ended before they got to the last few albums)

One of the best parts of the Joni archive series is that Joni is available to have a voice in curating it, which obviously can`t happen with Prince.

In a way Prince`s absence of influence may be an advantage for us and has lead to us having material that Prince would have never consented to release, but everything after his passing will be withou his influence, his touch, and will always have an asterix after it. sad
