Not sure if it's been spoken about, but to me Darkside sounds like Prince added his guitar later - if you listen to the very up front (high in the mix) instructions from Prince - he mentions something about "guitar soloing" to it (at 3.51). Either way I would've prefered it without the instructions and mumblings etc.

Yeah, I noticed that he said that, too. It’s a bit confusing because Prince started the track by saying that him and Levi would go first before Michael B. So what was Prince doing if not playing the guitar? He must’ve been playing it during the recording, no? And the way Levi reacted at the end makes me things Prince was shredding. So was Prince just commenting on his own guitar solo in real-time while playing it? Or maybe saying that later they would be mix the track and only leave the guitar solo in that section? Or did he really overdub the guitar solo after the fact? Hmmm.

Look, Prince is a cult artist who put out more duds than chart sucesses. His cult has many, many, maaany favorites and D&P ain't one of them. These ain't SDE's for the Backstreet Boys or Britney Spears. It might benefit the Estate to somewhat acknowledge what the cult actually wants (or in this specific instance, doesn't want).

Speak for yourself. This here 'cult' member is very much looking forward to the release. D&P is one of my favourites, it's the album that bought me to Prince. There are loads of people looking forward to this. Most of them won't post here because of the disparagiing from the, 'Prince peaked at 7 when he played the Batman theme on the family piano and everything since then has been shit', crowd.

Thank you !

only reason you guys think it HASNT been all downhill since the batman theme at age 7 recording is cos you havent heard it. when the estate release it as part of the batman SDE (next on the list, as it was one of his big sellers) you will finally understand what collectors have known for decades.

Can you elaborate?

Kidding, sorry.
Though who knows, maybe its out there lol

it's nice to see that some things remain the way they always were since the mid 80's.

every new release gets splattered with the stench of reports that 'it could have been
so much more if only THIS real good song was added' and 'but he also recorded nine
completely unrelated trax that rival everything he ever put out, but the record company
doesn't want to release them' bla bla bla.

at this point we can't even have a single without someone coming out of the woodwork
to let us know that yes, it's a decent single, but it's not the complete song, or a rewrite
or a bad mono mix of the actual song that is out there, which is phenomenal and which
is on an album that we will never get to hear, which is better than SOTT and 1999 and
Purple Rain combined.

soon the official twitter will post something like "here are some pictures of a nice new
exhibit at paisley park and the first people enjoying it" and the responses will be that
at the same time, from a basement in utah, an unknown person streamed seven prime
era prince tracks unknown to anyone, even the estate or former band members, and
the 4 people who listened to it on zoom or speaker phone are convinced that whatever
tour exhibit pp is offering, people don't even know, they have no fucking clue as to the
things they just heard.

somehow this is part of the whole experience. is it a sort of stockholm syndrome?

at this point it's almost as much a part of new prince music than actual new prince
music. and as much as I loathe it, I can't look away and in some twisted way I love
it almost as much as actual new music.

Exactly this...but I'm guilty of it a bit too!

.

It's been said many times on here but this probably could've been better with stronger tracks we know of like Player, I Wonder, Uh Huh!, etc

.

I'd have loved Willing & Able extended, instead of 2 versions of Horny Pony. Did we need both Darkside and Blood On The Sheets...

.

I get why people would oppose combining albums for SDE's but I'd have been happy to make an exception for Diamonds & Love. I'd love to get tracks like 1000 Hugs & Kisses, Race with Tony's vocals, Rave Church Style and others we don't know. Now we may never get these sad

i mean, i think its perfectly reasonable to wish that outtakes cut during this should be on this release. otherwise its like, well, what are they going to do with them or when will we hear them? hendrix fans say the same thing when a live album is released and omits certain songs that were also performed - its suspicious and for no other reason than to sell it later. id also have liked the earlier versions of other songs like daddy pop on here just cos, while they arent essential listening, for a 'band' record, and an album so polished, itd be cool to hear more of the rougher versions of all the album tracks. i still think d&p is a bit too polished, which marrs it for me, but i think its got a lot of good material on there, underneath all the slick production. comparing and seeing the differences is part of the albums story.

In a way I'm glad we got Darkside as I really like Blood On The Sheets but I doubted it was an actual Prince recording.

I don't think it sounds like Prince particularly, with no vocals, I thought maybe the recording was in the vault but had been recorded by a different band and had been mistaken as Prince song.

Darkside takes that doubt away.

I didn't mean people like us mere mortals talking about the outtakes we all know
that could have and should have been included.

I was talking about those that will mention any number of songs we have never
even heard about or only heard whispers about.

It's okay. I like the second part with the extended vamp, but the remix first part is a bit cheesy.

I prefer the version from The Beginnings and the version from the auction. I wish one of those would have been included rather than this 12".

Auction?

A few months ago there was a person on YouTube auctioning Prince and Prince-related memorbilia. In the background he played a bunch of unreleased stuff that's not widely circulating, including an alternative version of Daddy Pop.

(To be clear, he didn't auction off these unreleased songs. He just had them playing in the background while he auctioned off other things.)

There is also a few clips circulating where during his auctions, he played 4 tracks from the Diamonds and Love set: Face 2 Face, I Wonder (with more instrumentation than what's been circulating), Prince's demo for 1000 Hugs and Kisses, and an early version of Come (that starts off with "This is the dawning of a new sexual revolution...)
Of course we know last year he played tracks supposedly from Parade Deluxe including And How, Evolsidog, and Fun Love. Years ago he played a smoking version of Schoolyard with horns all through that mf! He's obviously well connected.

Yes it seems like the Diamonds and Love set had far more interesting vault tracks. I doubt the prince album will get any SDE treatment but hopefully there will be a deluxe release at some point (by the end of the year?).

Now that I've heard Blood On the sheets - I think I know what happened - only my take of course...
Prince was playing keys alongside Levi to show him what to play on the bass - and the guitar was added afterwards. It was only meant as a development song - BOTS is slicker/heavier in some ways but the soloing on Darkside is better in my opinion.
