these live versions really elevate the material. i wish these arrangements for "thunder" and "daddy pop" (truly incredible with that slap bass and rhythm guitar) were on the actual album instead of the overblown studio versions- even "jughead" gets a nice makeover. Tony M. now makes sense on the songs too, he was made for the live experience. i'm thrilled with this live album. if you could just pass your history class, baby, life would be all right.

My first listen. - Thunder... sounds indeed better, has more body live, nice. Daddy Pop... meh, never liked this song, and this live version is too much Rosie for me Diamonds & Pearls... don't get it why everyone is so wild over this. (I know, it's my problem, I never liked rosie's voice.) The extra breaks are fun though... Willing and Able. Jughead... nice, but Sonny's bass should've been more up front or less numb.. The Sacrifice Of Victor... now we're talking! Funk! Killing horns! Killing Michael & Sonny, The Steeles... bit too much Rosie, but bearable (i know, i'll shut up) Nothing Compares 2 U. Thieves In The Temple... Cool! i hear some Country-Funk in there... fun! Break is very nice. Sexy MF... OK, though it's the horns that are so geat towards the end. This song could've been more of a Dixieland wild horn-filled tune from the start to finish for me. Insatiable... verrrrrry nice! Guitar... really great live version! Cream... so much better! Well Done... a very pleasant and nice surprise. Gett Off. ... House style.

So, I have like seven bootlegs with shows from the D&P Tour, but the setlist doesn’t vary much from show to show – that was a pretty tight show. Of, course, it’s all audience recordings and I haven’t played them much because the D&P album and tour (where I attended four shows) was not exactly my favorite Prince era. But now, more than 30 years later, there is a nostalgia factor – you look kinder on this era with age. So, getting the Live at Glam Slam 11 January 1992 show in great sound quality just blows you away and makes you want to hear it again and again. It’s infectious. It’s a party. Back when D&P came out, it was received rather harshly by fans who had fallen in love with the critically acclaimed Prince of the 80s and the image he achieved with his bands and the exciting personalities in them. Prince and his bands were like a package deal. But the NPG was not a band that had won anyone over on the Nude tour, and here they were on an album – the Game Boyz with Tony M. rapping on every other song and Rosie Gaines who also took up a lot of space, basically duetting with Prince on the title track. But fans didn’t want to hear Rosie sing. They wanted to hear Prince. The irony was that when Prince had his exciting bands in the 80s, they were barely allowed in the studio, and here we had a band that didn’t really resonate, and NOW we get a band record?! Prince was also singing about Strollin’ in the park? Yeah, like he ever went strollin’ anywhere public. Also, although Gett Off and Cream were huge hit singles, they weren’t particularly popular with fans. They seemed superficial compared to his deeper material of the past. It was like Prince had run out of anything meaningful to say and was just going for “provocative.” So, of course the new track previewed on the D&P Tour followed in the same vein, Sexy M.F. But they were great party songs. And Prince did include something cool for the fans in the show – a mesmerizing version of Thieves In The Temple which included It and harkened back to the live rendition of Forever In My Life in the Sign O’ The Times Movie. That was the song we looked forward to at every show. We would have loved Prince singing Nothing Compares 2 U too, only he was doing it as a duet with Rosie Gaines. Enough of her. I had a dream of Rosie Gaines getting crushed up against the stage by onrushing fans, and sure enough, when the album came out, she was gone and when the Act II tour rolled around, so was the Game Boyz. What a relief. Because let’s face it… Tony M. wasn’t really rapping. He was more like, yelling! Certainly live. And every time Prince went for a change of clothes, there he was – yelling at the audience! And Diamond and Pearl, were they even dancing? More like posing and throwing their hair around. And them joining Prince in a bed for Insatiable? Wasn’t that just Do Me, Baby all over again? Yeah, the D&P wasn’t particularly memorable for good stuff. But we liked Let’s Go Crazy, Kiss, Delirious, 1999 - Purple Rain even, and we loved Live 4 Love. The audience chanting Live 4 Love – that was great. And the preview of Damn U which was sometimes played instead of Nothing Compares 2 U. We were young impressionable fans back then – in our twenties. We remember it all vividly. So now we get the live recording of the 1992 Glam Slam show. And wham! All those memories come back. Yeah, those really were good times, weren’t they? Rosie wasn’t that bad. I enjoyed her solo albums released later. So hearing her sing snippets of I Want U and In The Socket on Cream is just great. And those were Prince songs. On the tour, her solo spots were cover songs, like Chain Of Fools. That was great too, though. Daddy Pop was a great song – and here it sounds really good. Until Tony M. starts yelling. Oh, well. And I used to make up my own dirty lyrics for some of the songs back then. “Daddy Fuck?” For Willing And Able and Insatiable, too, but those were in Danish. I had fun singing those at parties. Oh, yeah, D&P was not the best Prince album, but it still was a big part of its time for a fan like me. And Diamonds And Pearls, wasn’t that just such a lovely song? And Thunder was good, too. And Willing And Able. There were some gems on that album. And here we get a great rendition of The Sacrifice Of Victor on top of that. Oh, yeah, this is a great show the Estate has selected for release. It’s a big party. It’s a trip down memory lane. A blast from a bygone age. Back when Prince was still with us and rockin’ our world with every release. The soundtrack of our lives. I think it’s gonna stay on my playlist for a while. Looking forward to the Blu-ray. Nope, that's typical Prince! I even get goose bumps with this chaos. Love it. It's the kind of big fantastic bombastic funk that was missing in this live show of pop & rock songs. Thank you for writing what i think. I fully agree with the sentiment and ways you look at it. I feel exactly the same for this era and release, band and members. Certainly compared with his more personal, warm, familiar, technically less (cold) skilled 80s bands. - True, this Glam Slam live release so far sounds great, energetic! I've always been more into Prince's studio material though. But since most fans excitement around these Glam Slam shows, i've been listening a bit more to other live material. I have loads and loads of live bootlegs i've barely ever, or never listened to. Since a few weeks I (re-)discover Prince's live performances again so to say. I've seen Prince countless times live since 1986, and nothing can beat the real thing. But just like you, ageing and nostagia kicking in, I also start to appreciate live material a bit more. It's all we have. Prince will never perform live again. Even with every never-before-seen Live material or complete live shows (we unfortunately only get very slowly, now and then) will never be like the real thing. - I've ordered the LP SDE, and canceled it. Then I've ordered the CD SDE set instead, and canceled it again due to poor unheard studio material imho. I'm now only interested in the Blue Ray of the Live show. And I'll patiently wait until that one is available. Cause apparently it is postponed due to pressing problems... Agree with scifilmnerd, theres a nostalgic element at play for me as this wa the first prince tour i got to see Not sure i think its all great though (ugh the yelling!). But it was the start of prince being about a huge show with a massive band, three male dancers, two female dancers (hot but not really dancers), his biggest horn section, a rapper, a mini Aretha, etc etc. This and the next album were about entertainment, spectacle, not much personal or unusual. Which is still fun but also a bit silly at times too and overstuffed in my view. But i look forward to hearing the show properly.

Do what you have to but, I don't get fans that still follow and listen to everything but won't buy. If this estate does not see $ from the releases, there will no longer be any releases. I actually buy multiples and gift them just to support all of this.
I see it simply as, this one man gave me so much pleasure over the last decades...it's almost like payback to support now. It's all a wash. Had he lived, toured, I'd have been many hundreds out due to ticket prices. To buy a $200 set...not an issue.

This set's doing what I hoped for: giving the era less polish, more life, and a more organic feel. Cream, D&P, Willing and Able, Daddy Pop, and Thunder are all much improved. Gett Off, Sexy MF, and Nothing Compares are about draws, and Jughead's still Jughead. There's still not much fun in Insatiable. For me, the highlight is Sacrifice. I think it's among the very best posthumous-released songs.
The secret weapon is Rosie. I get that she's not everyone's taste, but holy smokes. What a voice. She's single handidly elevating the material. I'm so happy we get to hear her like this.

IMO. Why should I support an organisation that has nothing to do with Prince? With music? They are the living proof for not being able to manage his legacy, over and over again. A few new songs, and we all blindly tend to forget what a total mess they are. This SDE was not compiled by them, it was done by Michael Howe and Co. It was almost ready before they came in, just like the two next ones, probably PR and Parade. Post Celebrations are a shameful money sucking let down experience. Compare the first post Celebration with the last one... It's getting down the drain. I am (and possibly most of us are) not that rich to buy 'multiple packages of SDE's' to give away. First of all, I don't know that many people that still know who Prince is. And it's certainly not the right time for payback, to keep the Estate from fuking up more. I don't care if the Estate goes Bankrupt. I really don't. Prince left us with an incredible and amazing back catalogue. Not many artist ever released so much in their lifetime. Now there even is more video material to discover via youtube alone, then when he was still with us. (We have the boots also, and Prince always knew they were out there. He only started to really fight bootleggers when he realised his lifestyle being too expensive. Why else did he lived alone in PP you think? And ended up with talentscouting a background band like 3rdEyeGirl, who live were his worst bnad so far...)

. JFC. . There are TWO Blu-rays. . One is an AUDIO ONLY one, containing ONLY THE ALBUM in Dolby ATMOS (and somewhat Hi-Res audio). That one is sold SEPARATELY and is delayed. Oh, and AFAIK Sony/Legacy isn't even bothering to release it and I can only see it available in European webshops. . Then there is a Blu-ray that is INCLUDED WITH THE SDE and which contains the Glam Slam show, the Special Olympics and the D&P videos. . If that is too confusing for you lot... . Oh, and it is spelled "Blu-ray".

Blue bloody ray whenever I want. You know what? Bleu-Raei, Blu-rey, Woo-way, Turquoise-bay, Boo-hay, Almost-Blueish-green-but -closer-to-the-darker-blue-fucking-ray! Theink yoo fow cleering tihs oud aniway. - So this explains why I have both (already) downloaded from a closed group. They indeed sound slightly different. I thought one is a bit louder than the ohter. Need to listen with headphones again.

Great show, but why is no one talking about this performance of Bloody Mouth? Looks like it was a bonus track on the download I got. It's insane to me that he ripped into this unreleased deep cut after the professional recording equipment was shut off and almost everyone had gone home. Thank god someone managed to capture this moment, though, and the estate had access to this recording. Unreal performance of one of his best ever songs.

Honestly the best advertisement for this new set would have been the Netflix doc coming out simultaneously. Millions would have their eyeballs & ears on it but I guess they’re waiting for Purple Rain part … to come out.

The estate blocked it because there’s a lot of negative allegations against him, apparently. Not sure who they interviewed, but I have a feeling many of the interviews were skewed and edited to purposely look bad, and those interviewed may not be happy with how their statements have been used… but hopefully we’ll get to find out soon!!

Listened to this properly today with some good headphones. Sacrifice, Cream, and 1999 medley all got me quite emotional… first time in a long time I’ve been hit by the feeling of not ever seeing him live again! Pretty sad. Glad we’re getting these amazing recordings though.

Some of the best stuff of this era was visual. The costumes, the lift/elevator lol, the staging, all that stuff was important in the early 90s tours. Even the photos and imagery, princes presentation in this era was brilliant. Im hoping some of this shows video footage ends up on youtube.
