Superb write up. The Tora Tora persona was exclusive to the Exodus album. I remember back in the 90s there were a few CD-ROM bootlegs, I forget if it was "Metropolis" or "Freedom (2.0?)". One of them had a brief video of Prince as Tora Tora facing the camera saying "Kicking the hot wax from uptown to Mars, This is Tora Tora and I'm here to say everybody's a star, you just gotta get on the big dipper, so you can be pulled back on the world" What was the official use for that?

I think that was Freedom 2.0 on the Moonraker label?

Yes? My memory is terrible for albums/boots, although I think I remembered the entire Tora Tora speech unprompted. There might have even been a second short video with him again speaking to the camera. Sort of an intro and outro...

The album isn't mentioned so I'm inclined to believe it wasn't part of a marketing campaign. So maybe it was intended to be used for a tour/live performance?

Hey, thanks for your work on this articles and others like it.

It inspired me to rediscover the album, which was on my computer but far from my radar. I made a playlist, leaving off the 90s segues and adding Mad, Superhero, Slave to the System #2, and Lovesign. A very good listen.

I had a similar experience. This was never one of my favorite albums, but reading the article inspired me to revisit it. I'm now really digging it.

Like you, I made a playlist that removes the seqgues (those may have been one of the things preventing me from enjoying the album in the past). I also added Superhero to the mix.

The only song that doesn't thrill me is on the released version is The Good Life. I don't mind it and will usually listen to it without hitting skip, but it's my least favorite by far. To me, it sounds like some of the cheesy '90s R&B you'd hear on the radio and could easily be confused with BelBivDevo, Boyz 2 Men or the like.
