Prince & Beatles songs

Was listening to this 10min+ version of Prince performing ''Come Together'' (September 22nd 2007).

A nice guitar heavy driven funked up version, with a cool stripped down long melodic break.

''Turn of the Television, ain't nuthin' on''...

He made the song his by turning it into a positive rant having the crowd chant ''Come Together'' while preachin' some positiveness.

Nice take.

-

Did Prince ever played other Beatles songs live?

I remain absolutely convince that in the early 2000s I read a very short piece in either the NME or Melody Mker that claimed Prince was considering his next album to be one of Beatles covers. My memory of it is so clear but I've never been able to track it down at all so am never sure if I've invented a memory

Perhaps all you are remembering was a discussion here 10 years ago where thedance spread a rumour that they heard that Prince was doing a Beatles cover album in 2004. No evidence or support or source was ever found back then either.

It made no sense back then as the only link cited was Prince doing While my guitar gently weeps. This song was only performed by the surviving 2004 Hall of Fame inductees because fellow inductee, George Harrison died in 2001.

It beggars belief that people who know Prince as well as we think we do would think that Prince would release a whole album of nothing but covers of any other artist.

Yes and no, it counts because he played one hell of a solo live over it and stole the show. wink)))

But it remaisn a George H. song.

Didn't he have Elton John join him on stage to sing that song?

Yes, on 13th September.

I was there for that one. And for the Come Together performance in the am on the 22nd.

I always wondered if he'd ever cover Let It Be after he said in an NME interview in 96 it was one of the greatest songs ever written.

It's a Beatles song, not a George Harrision (I mean, he wrote it, but it's a Beatles track).

There was a report around the 3121 Las Vegas dates that he did a private show of mainly Beatles covers in front of some people that could have made it happen (like the head of Apple Records) and talk of Beatles-related Prince project.

As if he wanted to try his own with something like 'The Holy River' imo

Always had to think about that.

(I also read that interview.)

If you listen to dark, the bridge is quite Beatles sounding to me too

No, it was more than just a thread on the org. Someone else posted the link.

It amazes me you think Prince wouldn't cover entire albums by other artists, just out of boredom over a weekend. He did plenty of covers live. Circa 3121, if he thought he could get a big push from some industry bigwigs, that's all the more reason.

A link to a rumour is just that, and nothing more than that. A rumoured link is less than that.

There is no link in the 2013 thread except to dead photobucket links to pictures from While My Guitar Gently Weaps and, I assume, a Beatles discography. In the total lack any support for the claim, the thread moved on to discuss other things with thedance specifically stating they cannot find the source of the rumour and asking if anyone else knows - the response to that question was nothing but tumbleweeds rolling by in the distance.

I don't know why you think it is amazing that Prince never did what he demonstably never did. Doing selective covers live is very far from recording entire albums that we know nothing of despite unsubstantiated, unsupported and unproven long dismissed rumours that he all but released them.
