*Unpopular Opinion* Am I the only one who doesn't like Adore?

The entire SOTT/Crystal Ball project was pure genius until it gets to Adore. I played it once when I bought the album March 1987 and never played it again. The lyrics are too over the top and he just keeps going on and on until it ends. IMO if he toned down the lyrics and ad libbed the outro and added maybe a guitar or organ solo it could have been a hit single. Am I the only one who doesn't like this song? BE HONEST!

i like it but always thought the SOTT album should end on a high, like IGBABN does in the film.

i like princes ballads, but idk, he sounds too 'happy' or too exuberant than a song like this needs. id have liked more sincerity in the vocal, like on do me baby.

its still great, obv, but that always bugged me about it.

i never thought it was too OTT though... my fave version of it is the lovesexy tour version, even though thats truncated.

my unpopular adore opinion is that as far as SOTT, slow love is actually better! also, some of the emancipation ballads are better - e.g. lets have a baby.

It's fantastic, featured on the sound trak of my childhood, but you have to be in the mood for it, not so much of a required mood like Insatiable (original version) requires, but still a mood.

His music is so diverse that there is room for people to not like great songs. Some people hate songs I ADORE (Temptation and Free) what do I care?

I like to say Pick any of the 4 sides from SOTT ... thoes few songs cover more musical gound that most acts cover in 40 years!

Nah my mom doesn't like it either, and when she told me I had perpetual "🤨" face at her. The only song better than Adore is it's sexy sister by the name of Crucial. Take your pick their both beautiful R&B ballads.

Lieberum: Hot take: I like “Forever in My Life” even more (than “Adore”). I think that’s the sweetest song he ever wrote.

I don't always agree with the concensus, but in this case I do. Adore is one of the greatest songs ever written. The OP is correct that the song goes on and on, but the more it goes on the better it gets. The last few minutes are the best part.

But with all of that said, the first time I heard it I didn't think much of it either. I was a teenage boy, not prone to immediately take to slow songs. It was only after listening to it repeatedly the the hook sunk in. Also, the more you listen to it, especially with good headphones, the more you hear going on. You could listen to it a dozen times and still find new detail.

this is one of those lines that make me wonder how the time could have done this song

morris couldnt have done those vocal runs ofc, but the humour is quite morris (well, very prince, like how he would write for morris at least)

If the time/morris ever do another album id like it to be covers of prince songs Morris should have had. Eg pretty man, adore, etc

Tbh this is the only album i wanna hear from them at this point lol

Purple travesty that prince released pretty man (he didnt even do it justice like morris would have).

Im being a bit hyperbolic. I consider adore one of princes humourous songs rather than a genuine or proper slow jam cos he doesnt sing it with much sincerity really, hes calling attention tonhimself singing this great big love declaration, its a bit self conscious. But its not really a Morris vehicle, even though it could be, similiar to international lover or movie star.

I don’t think it’s possible to over-rate Adore. It’s truly one the best songs he or anyone else has ever written.

I disagree with anyone here saying it lacks sincerity or should be a Morris Day song. It’s a deceleration of sincerity, made again and again in every facet of the song. The humour doesn’t negate the sincerity; the humour is touching and endearing and loving. The humour solidifies it, makes Prince and the subject of his adoration feel real (in the studio version at least).

Adore is a powerful song on its own, but its placement at the end of Sign o the Times has always had an enormous effect upon me when listening to the album through. It is perhaps my favourite album ‘experience’: hearing those first bass notes as we drop into the song and the horns come in over the fading crowd cheer. It feels like the denouement after a long and unexpected journey and has the effect of turning SOTT into something more than just a collection of the some of the world’s greatest songs.

I’ve thought many times about what elevates Adore above other top-tier Prince ballads and one of the things that stands out to me is Prince’s creation of the mise en scène. ‘That night I had to call you’. It’s the emphasis of ‘That night’. It’s so emotionally charged - the line just contains such volumes about what a significant moment it was. It creates such a strong visual image: Prince so helplessly smitten, delivering every game in the book in to the mouthpiece until the daylight hours (which makes the humour land later in the song, it exists within the context of the relationship). I really don’t think Prince’s lyrics have ever been better than they have here.

Another thing. Adore might not be my favourite song (that award goes to SOTT alums The Ballad of Dorothy Parker/If I was Your Girlfriend), but from the 2:30 mark it contains my favourite whole minute of music: what a gorgeous sweeping instrumental breakdown/bridge. Again, the music just hits a strong emotional charge which feels incredibly grounded. It’s perfect.

Rant over!

My brother is a fan, and he wasn't digging Adore. What I told him was, avoid the single edit. It just makes it trivial ... I am usually ok with a single edit, but the Adore fade feels criminal.

Also I find that live album version sorta cringe, the way he hams up the bit about the smashed ride.

Really appreciated that part of what thisisreece posted about the way it drops in from the crowd cheer.

I can sort of remember realizing it was awesome, after a period of not realizing.

You won't find many, indeed. "Adore" is an excellent song on an excellent album. I'm not a fan of slow songs / ballads in general, but it's just... genius. ("Slow Love", on the other hand.... lol)

I'm not going to agree - I think it's a great song. But I also think Prince's ballads got better and better over the years. Some of the tracks on Emancipation, Shhh, The One etc - I think these are even more brilliant.

I actually agree with the OP. To me, Crucial (the Sax version ONLY) is 100x better. I also listened to Adore once. sad

But then, I dislike Temptation and Insatiable, so what do I know... boxed
