Indeed, "Money Don't Matter 2Nite" has some very nice little things in the mix
that never stood out in the original album mix. It's brighter now, and it seems
almost as if it's not quite as slow and 'droning' as it used to be. It used to bore
me a bit but it doesn't now. In fact, I was shocked it was already over when it
was.

Anyway, I have to go to bed now, i'm already 2 hours past my time lol I just
can't stop listening. One last Live 4 Love and that's it for today.

Cheers! Have a good one guys!

No glitch here (in the Atmos mix). What are you hearing?

.

I still can't get used to that weird snare sound in "Gett Off".

I'll cut/paste my comment from the other thread, since there's one dedicated to the Atmos mix:

"I properly listened to the Atmos remix of "Diamonds and Pearls". This is a weird experience. This is clearly a remix (I mean, yes, we knew it was, but it's striking when listening to it). You hear things that you never heard before (synth lines, percussion elements, effects, etc. that were buried in the mix). This is like listening to a different album.

Number23 is right when he uses words such as "reinvented" and "reimagined".

"Gett Off" is probably the least successful remix on the album."

Are either the Atmos mix or the regular remaster available on Tidal? I saw someone on Twitter yesterday say that it was (they were upset that the cover changed or something), but on my Tidal, it's just the same old 1991 version of D&P.

And yes, I switched to Tidal back in the day at Prince's suggestion, and no, I'm never going to switch back. I don't have any Apple products and I like the Tidal interface and that they pay artists more.

Frustrating not being able to listen to what every else is hearing, though!

Because of this blu ray audio release, I actually upgraded my surround receiver to a new ATMOS capable unit. I am in the middle of setting it up with ceiling speakers. It took a Prince release like this one to get me to upgrade after 20 years:) Is there any details mixed for the ceiling speakers?

P whispers 'kill them all' repeatedly over every track from the Atmos ceiling speakers - except for Insatiable and Tony's raps.

I have a 7.1.4 speaker Atmos setup in my main listening room, and I collect surround mixes, so really looking forward to this one but holding out for the Blu-ray Audio disc.

It's so different from the original. Generally I find the bass is now much too prominent in the mix, but is nice that there's better separation of parts and less muddy guitar and vocal parts in the mid range.

Gett Off is really interesting, much heavier bass, much clearer electric guitar, but the drums have gotten quite fizzy now, the snare has lost its gated reverby "ring" and the vocals are too out front now, they don't sit nicely in the mix. Strollin vocals sound radically different, and Live 4 Love is like a whole new song, there's bits of it that I never heard in the original.

It's interesting, enjoyable even, breathes some new life into tracks we all know really well. The original record is much better overall tho. It kinda bugs me that this is presented on Apple Music as if it were the Prince original, I think it needs to be made clearer that it isn't.

this sounds interesting, but these kinds of mixes are designed to be heard in particular speaker setups AFAIK. so its no wonder it sounds so different if youre just listening on a standard set up. i cant imagine its meant to be heard on headphones? sounds cool though.

You need special headphones that are 360-enabled. Or earbuds, like I think AirPods Pro is an example.

.

I made the mistake of listening to the 360 through standard earphones and it made me sick, it sounded so bad!

I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

Been listening to the Dolby Atmos 5.1 version, for the third time now.

The whole album in one take.

It occurs to me how heavy this whole album is filled with (plastic-ish sounding) electronic percussion.

Just too much pre-programmed stuff, even some drum sounds.

Obviously completely different from the LM1.

Wasn't this sort of overdone percussion a bit of a hype in 1991? from what I remember...

Sometimes it kills the song (imho).

Listen to the first two songs plus ''Live 4 Love'' and ''Walk Don't Walk''.

It just never stops.

Maybe that's also one of the reasons why I am not so fond of this album.

Prince was a master in percussion arrangements before D&P though, and after that.

-

All by all quite happy with this Dolby Atmos version.

Makes the album indeed sound like a completely different experience.

wink

The bass in "Live 4 Love" is hypnotic within this mix, an atmospheric presence in "Cream" I've never experienced prior and a truly new dimension to the guitar riff in "Gett Off" makes listening to this album, one I've listened to countless times over the years, as if I'm hearing these tracks anew.

yes, agree. Also finally hearing that When Doves Cry atmos mix is a mindblowing experience.
When the guitar solo kicks in it isn't as abrupt as what we've always known on every release.
I can'wait for a Purple Rain, or actualy al teh albums, in a great Atmos mix.

If you think Atmos highlights the plactic sound of the persussion on D&P, how bad do you think the plastic progaming on Emancipation is going to sound?

Holy fucking shit! I have a Dolby Atmos setup in my basement with a 4k AppleTV box that supports Dolby Atmos through Apple Music. This is next level. I love listening to music in Atmos but I feel a lot of it is just generically thrown together without much thought, while still sounding cool, but this is a whole other experience. It’s like they decided to take a Prince album and mix it in Atmos with the thought of let’s focus on just how powerful the Atmos treatment can be. Benchmark Atmos stuff here. It truly sounds different. The title track alone is wild. Prince’s vocals sound completely different. Insane.

Exactly. wink

But again, i could be completley wrong.

The Atmos mix really opened up studio techniques and sound qualtity i neve imagined possible.

Emancipation could be again something completely different.

But possibly also plastic-ish.

The benefit of the doubt, let's say.

I was just trying to think of songs that would benefit the most from an atmos mix. Obviously all songs would benefit to one degree or another, but I was trying to think of songs that already have a bit of a 3D quality about them... Songs where Prince was tyring to come at you with unique sounds from all directions, but was limited by existing technology. For songs like that, an atmos mix could help fully realize the atmosphere Prince was trying to create.

The first song that came to mind was Pop Life. Listening to it in stereo I already feel like I'm immersed in a carnival. With an atmos mix, I think that would be even more true. The next song that came to mind was Positivity.
