My favourite Prince guitar-solo? Forget 'While My Guitar...'.

Forget all those wonderful Purple Rain solos and all.

My absolute favourite Prince guitar-solo is that brief one at the end of 'Time Waits For No One'.

.
No one talks about 'Time Waits For No One'. But that solo kills me every time with its very few notes. It's barely even a solo, yet it cuts deep into my heart.

Starting with that sustained high C, it's like he's trying to say something really personal, but after a couple of lines he's choking up... He starts adding something 3 times but he's choking up. Those broken notes are so painfully beautiful.
.
As the late great Les Paul said "All you need is one note, but the trick is finding the right note – a note that sparkles like the Hope Diamond, and with all this air around it". Prince understood this so well and this solo is the prime example of a great musician controlling his ego and having the outmost respect to the music by playing only a few well-chosen, wonderfully phrased notes that carry a ton of emotion. He was a true master.

Friends don't let friends clap on 1 and 3.

Finally, some recognition for this great solo. I adore this one. The whole song is great,
but the guitar work here is just so very beautiful. Yes!

I fully agree. What a fantastic heartbroken feel to play in notes.

I wish there was a longer version of this...

Who knows.

I don't know if I have an all-time fav since there are just so many... but I have a soft spot for the solos in Poor Goo. The Undertaker set in general.

That guitar solo has stood out in my mind since the first time I heard it back in 1989. Such a beautiful song altogether too. In fact, that entire album has some of Prince's best writing for someone else.

It's funny when you start a thread about a certain song, because almost no-one ever talks about it, and "of course" you'll get a ton of responses that talk about anything but that song... smile

Probably because thats a weak song, with an uneventful guitar solo, and most peoples' reaction to that, is to mention the guitar solos that THEY like...if you're looking to control peoples' thoughts and reactions, talk to yourself, by yourself...of course

Most people dont care about "your favourite" guitar solo...they care about their own favorites...you are not ever going to control or limit anyones' replies in any open forum...so keep it moving and stop crying, of course

The topic of the thread according to the 'ole "subject" aka topic line is "

My favourite Prince guitar-solo? Forget 'While My Guitar...'.

".

That being said, I appreciated the OP nomination especially because that solo isn't talked about a lot. But surely you don't expect in a thread again labeled "My favourite Prince guitar-solo? Forget 'While My Guitar...'." that other org'ers aren't going to mention their favs? It's the audience participation part of internet forums. You want echo chambers upvotes go to reddit.

It has that 1988 sound all over it. I agree: it's short, intense, to the point. I love that period. Thanks for making me listen to that song again.

Exactly. The topic of the thread teases a converation about a great Prince guitar solo... The fact that most responses have then pivoted to other favored solos seems to indicate a lack of interest in the OP's choice. Ultimately, who cares? What a weird passive-aggressive response to what should just be a fun discourse.

Nailed it. Absurdly passive aggressive

Precisely why I deleted my response

Whatever…. I actually thought it was a cool topic until…

Look Sir Snatch, people can sidenote something if they wish. Also, you never specifically asked anyone else what theirs was. Your title is "My Favourite Prince guitar-solo?" meaning you asked the question then answered it for yourself.

Even if we took your self-question as being posed to us as a whole, that leaves the door wide open to answer how one chooses. RJ's right - you can't control people's thoughts or reactions. Folks like what they like.

Fenwick posted that he liked "Joy In Repetition" from One Night Alone Live for pure solo. "Rearrange" from 1999 SDE because it's "4 minutes of bliss." And the sneak "feel" solo in "Revelation." What exactly is wrong with any of that? He answered the question 3x over. That covers two or three decades.

How is that not on topic??

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

« Weak song » my skinny white ass.
« uneventful guitar solo » my big fat crystal balls.

He expressed in a few notes far more than many other verbose solos, although this being Prince, he can blabber as much as he wants, it will always be a Ride Fantastic.

Bravo for pointing famz ears to an underrated little gem.
