Batman album, Batman day!

Is anyone else giving the Batman album some love today? It's Batman day! I love this album, particularly Partyman and Batdance! Gloriously free-form songwriting! Ok, I've already used too many punctuation marks 🤣😂🤣 have a great #batmanday 👍

Overall, Batman is a really good album. Ok, so maybe two or three (or four) songs on there are bloody terrible by Prince's usual standards but on the flip side of that coin, this album also has some of what I consider to be among his best. Electric Chair is the big highlight for me but The Future, Partyman and Trust are all right up there for me. In fact, I've made a combined playlist taking songs primarily from Batman and Graffiti Bridge, and I listen to it more than any other Prince playlist I have.

I'm listening now to the wonderful Vinyl Reissue.

Great album.

Never understood why people thought it was a big step down from the previous albums.

The Future / Electric Chair are Probably my favorite opening tracks to any album

I also love The Arms of Orion.

Each previous Prince album offers up something new artistically from the one that came before it, conceptually as an entire full cohesive piece of work. Whether it's something you dug or not, each album was bringing something new or unique to the table.

Batman is the first album where he retreads familiar ground and puts out a set of "Prince"-styled songs with no larger or grandiose intent of cohesion. The album's two bookends "The Future" and "Batdance" are the closest he comes to actually doing something new and progressive, but in between those it's all places he's already been in styles he's already explored. Other than some snippets of movie dialogue and smacking a "written by Bruce Wayne" label on a set of Anna Fantastic songs it's basically Prince on shuffle.

It's not underrated.

Casuals or huge Batman '89 fans consistently rate this higher than even Purple Rain and SOTT.

It's quite beloved outside the superfandom and even relatively within the superfandom.

Here in europe, older Prince albums on vinyl are often hard to find in record stores.

And when you find them, prices are still high.

Batman is an album i don't see all that often.

Lovesexy see more. Same for Purple rain and some (new) bootleg vinyls of the (repeatedly) '84 era (shows).

Although the Batman album sold well back in the day, it still remains in peoples collection it seems.

Good. smile

The CD & vinyl singles of the (first) Batman era are super hard to find as well!

It was the beginning of the CD singles era, and nearly the end of 45 rpms.

Althoug I remember that back in the day you could find them a lot,

even a few years after the album came out.

Now it's really hard to find them.

Which are the 2/3/4 you particularly dislike? It was the first Prince album I bought, when it came out. I don't dislike any of the tracks but I think it sags in the middle a little with Vicki Waiting/Trust/Lemon Crush. Although I really changed my mind on Vicki Waiting when he released the live version from 1995 on the NPGMC in 2001 (and then on the Live From Paisley Park EP in 2005).

The Arms Of Orion. It kind of reminds me of a bad Disney song. I half expected to hear Aladdin and Jasmine on vocals.

Lemon Crush. Not my kind of thing, I'm afraid.

Batdance. I know this could be a controversial one, but I don't like this song at all.

Vicki Waiting. It's not a bad song at all. I actually quite like it. But the rest of the album is so good that this song kind of seems bad in comparison. But taken on its own merits, I like it.

Like I said in my initial post, despite a few songs in here that I don't like, the good more than outweighs the bad.

My son says he often includes Batdance on his workplace playlist. He says it never fails to provoke a response, usually around the 'Vicki Vale' part. Also, it's awesome 👌

Disney songs can be great. But Arms Of Orion is not like one of those songs. Not for me. Far too corny for my liking.

Only song that isn't worth a repeat listen is Lemon Crush. Always been one of my favourites. Some of the best sounding programmed drums on a Prince album.

Not a bad track on there
Its just that everything is about a 7/7.5 with moments that make them 6 or 6.5 lol

"Lemon Crush" is GOATed. That's the one song where I drop my abject proselytizing about the artistry or lackthereof of this record and truly just get the funk out.

ShellyMcG said:

This is a bad thing? Name one bad song Aladdin and Princess Jasmine sang in that entire movie. My reason for liking it would be written the same as your reason for disliking it.

Who gonna stop another Batman track-by-track ranking? N O B O D Y. Let's do it:

01. The Future

02. Eye Luv U 'n' Me

03. The Arms of Orion

04. Lemon Crush

05. Vicki Waiting

06. Sex

07. 200 Balloons

08. Scandalous

09. Batdance

10. Partyman

11. Electric Chair

12. Trust

"Dance with the Devil" would be way up there too if he wasn't freaked out about being "too dark" on the soundtrack to a Tim "Goth Icon" Burton movie or whatever it was.

"Trust" is the only 100% truly awful track with no redeeming qualities. I maintain Tim Burton was just messing with Prince rejecting "200 Balloons" yet approving this one. Him and Danny Elfman probably had a big laugh over this apparent power play. They were sticking it to WB for forcing Prince on their movie. Even by "phoned-in Prince" standards this is the most supremely phoned-in Prince track in the entire Prince discog. It makes "Purple & Gold" look like "Sometimes It Snows in April".

Hahaha. This whole post me me laugh in a nice way. I even agree re: Aladdin! Though Electric Chair as the 11th best song?!?! But you and I both love Lemon Crush so all is forgiven!

Let's get trippy picture shoe here. Rankings below:

1) Electric Chair

2) The Future

3) Vicki Waiting

4) Lemon Crush

5) 200 Balloons

6) The Arms of Orion

7) Batdance

8) I Love You In Me

9) Scandalous

10) Partyman

11) Trust

Trust is so lame and the way it's used in the movie makes it even worse. Love Dancing With The Devil. I've never actually listened to the Scandalous Sex Suite.

This album is peak phoned in prince.
Did he ever phone it in as well as on this album?
I love u in me loses points for the surgery line.
Trust is like prince doing that kc and the sunshine kind of disco. Its so stupidly upbeat i cant help but like it.
200 balloons is great for how blaring it is and how he obv made next to no effort on it but somehow still pulls it off. Maybe this is the last album he could get away with that kind of thing and get such good results?
Im gonna defend AOO and say its one of his loveliest ballads. It should have been as popular as purple rain!
He shouldve given it to bette Midler or someone like that.
But totally agree, on lemon crush you just have to turn your brain off and surrender to the groove, the funkiness, the brilliant double tracked vocals. He had a live one there
cool

Good and bad are subjective. If you ask me to name a bad song in Aladdin, I would say "A Whole New World". It's fine for the movie and the scene in which it's used. But I would never listen to it in the car or on the bus. I don't like those kinds of corny songs.
