Lot of repetition. But its not quite a mood piece either, cos its broken up with the soloing and sort of loses its way. Prince was obv trying to write an epic kinda song, he tried again with 3 chains... but never quite got there in my humble opinion. Nothing wrong with the form cb takes, i like JB tracks where the band just play, but its a diff thing. This is like a sort of funk epic, but it just doesnt build up to anything or go anywhere really despite a lot of great things in there, it just ends up a cool extended jam. From when those chimes and amazing strings come in at around 0.40 to just before the 5 min mark, its perfect, but after then it just enters 'extended 12" version' territory. Its not nearly as interesting as something like the long computer blue. But even there prince edited it for release and arguably made it tight AF. Cb is a brilliant piece, as good as all my dreams, life can be so nice, thers others here with us, etc, its peak revolution era prince, but not all ten mins. [Edited 9/13/23 13:30pm]
We differ in opinon here as CB is much more interesting and varied to me than the Computer Blue extended version. Don't get me wrong, I love CB and the extended verison, but CB is more interesting to me. Let's love both!
It's the design of the tracks. "Crystal Ball" has more of a design/concept that lends itself to a longer epic track length. "Computer Blue" extended is cool long, but what it's doing is easily just as enjoyable in 5 minute format.
It's like his extended jams, but moreso like a "live" extended jam/vamp with a lil more organic texture & motion vs. the looping studio creations that are most of his 12'' extendeds. Like it sort of reminds me of "The War", another Prince super long track I also actually enjoy.

What band? There is no band. Everything on the track, except Clare Fischer’s strings and Susannah’s mousy vocals, is Prince. |

i meant 'the band' as he pretends it is a band.
it doesnt really change anything though.
i need to hear the version without the strings actually.
hopefully when they do the parade SDE they dont 'forget' to include all the strings-less versions.
bohemian rhapsody is maybe not the right kind of comparison actually, it seems longer in my mind as its got so much packed into it, but its only about 6 mins. something like hendrix's 1983 a merman i should turn to be is prob a fairer comparison, as they are both about the same length.

...the strings are like the best part. This is like people who prefer "Crucial" without the sax. |

I love the strings too. Clare Fischer outdid himself on this one. Cinematic in a classic hollywood way which doesnt 'fit' in an.obv way but sounds perfect. |

CB is not in the same league, or as accomplished as those two songs.
its not really an epic song, its more a song, with an extended section at the end, not that diff from princes extended versions on the 12"s.
Every day that passes I read something on the org that is more egregious than the last.
I second that.
Pure blasphemy. |

I was telling myself the exact same thing.
.
Prince fans are crazy (and that includes fans on Discord servers and other private forums, BTW, even though people like to ridicule "the Org" there). But there's a certain charm to that craziness. |

Any time I venture off to other Prince online communities they spend so such an inordinate amount of time "trashing" the org that I inevitably decide it would be better to just go bump an old thread at the org. |

[Edited 9/14/23 1:53am] I’ve always thought David Bowie’s Station to Station was a good comparison. And I love both songs dearly. Hundalasiliah! |
