Gotta agree, it's by far the more generic and forgettable hit single of his career. Interestingly, it always reminded me of a watered down version of "Something To Talk About" by Bonnie Raitt, but I just looked up the dates and her album was recorded in September 1990-February 1991, while "Cream" was recorded in December 1990. I always wondered if Prince took some inspiration from the Raitt song (in addition to T-Rex) but it seems unlikely he heard an early cut of Bonnie's song before it came out. Then again, he did write songs for her in the previous decade, so who knows...

Didn’t she recently claim that she thought Prince used some of her slide guitar licks recorded during her Paisley sessions, on Cream? [Edited 9/7/23 12:11pm]

Yes...Thats the MAIN reason i never liked Cream...i always thought it sounded too much like "Something To Talk About", and i dont like that song either

No it isn't. We're talking about Horny Pony, not Cream. The orger formerly known as https://prince.org/profil...nglishGent

Its basically the album version without her. Bootleg name : Diamonds And Pearls Beginnings [Free Boot Generation] I will take my place, In the great below

I think Rosie is terrible, always have done. Live she was even worse. I've never liked any of his pronounced singers. Boni Boyer with her scream-until-I'm-sick thing, Rosie warbling away on every fucking thing, then the awful shouting shelby and whoever the hell else. All terrible and all totally unnecessary. Prince was a great singer, he didn't need these other screamers. And if they were so great, where are any of them now? Dead or nowhere. Formerly TheDigitalGardener etc.

dadeepop said: I love the album version (and video), but this more stripped-down, heavier guitar version is a nice surprise. That being said, I’d prefer if all of the vault tracks not include alternate versions of songs that we already have. (If we’re just limited to 33 unreleased tracks.) I kind of agree with but I have really enjoyed the alternate versions. Especially Forever In My Life and Insatiable. I'm really looking forward to hearing the extended Diamonds and Pearls. I hope it has the guitar solo as played live. Something BIG Is Coming.

Wow, this take is really good. More lively compared to the original which is a bit stiff.

There's nothing wrong with Rosie Gaines but the problem is that she was overused. I didn't like her on a few songs like Gangster Glam and Push but she's great on Walk Don't Walk and Diamonds and Pearls. U are now an official member of the New Power Generation

Boni was 9/10 for the big soul/gospel back up that prince wanted. I mean when shes given space on forever in my life, she kills it. But then im biased towards the 87/88 band. Funny how ppl regard the npg band as his 'blackest band', or the 'return to his roots', or the band assembled to 'regain the rnb audience' when he had a majority black band in 87/88.
Rosie was 7.5/10. I generally liked her input. The rest though i can do without really. Or in small doses. He gave them way too much room. [Edited 9/7/23 15:52pm]

This take is cool to hear but do i wanna hear it repeatedly? No. Its just a practice run. Michael bland really hits the snare loud doesnt he. Very loud and very square rhythmically. The finished cream is still great. Prince sounds perfect on there.

I like Rosie Gaines.I like what she brought to the table. Her vocals really ignited songs like “Cream” and “Diamonds and Pearls”.It’s hard to imagine the D&P album without her.

If this were suddenly leaked in this quality, we'd all be creaming our shorts. This is a great "livestudio" version and is closer to the Arsenio performance, which is certainly the definitive version. The album version is smooth and simple, fine single for top 40, but is pretty subdued. There's a lot more fun in this "take 2". Considering the era we're regulated to for D&P SDE, I welcome this one. No unwanted rapping or whatever, just P doing his thang. This is the best thing I've heard yet from this SDE, no contest.
