The Purple Rain cover is no more

So backlot set where the cover for Purple Rain was shot is being torn down. So that little stairwell facade is no more.

Warner is tearing down all that backlot, where shows and films like I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, The Munsters, Desperate Housewives, The 'Burbs and so, so SO much more was filmed. It sorta makes all those shows happen in the same universe because you can see the same houses in multiple movies and TV shows. I think the Solis house was the original Munsters house facade. The Bewitched interior was also Julie Harris' house on Knots Landing. I think the Van DeCamp house was Major Nelson's on I Dream of Jeannie. (One of them was.) So all of Wisteria Lane was basically the same street as those 60s and 70s shows.

But it includes the little section they used for Prince and Apollonia. I suppose we can take that off your list of places to visit.

The store used as The Taste club front.

Morris's apartment

Apollonia's hotel front

Lotta those shots were in downtown Los Angeles.

Thanks 4 the link.

In that particular scene, we could see the mic on the top of the screen (with the VHS & not the DVD (?!?)).

The VHS was formatted for older TVs, the more 'square' format. They'd often scan the film 'open-matte', giving you more image at the top and bottom to fill that square tv screen. Image area that normally is blocked off in film, and the 16x9 aspect ratio of today's TVs. It's the same reason you used to be able to see Pee-Wee's plastic bike chain going into the compartment he's pulling it out of on VHS and early 'full-frame' dvds..

These scene with Apollonia is pretty telling because that hotel in the background - the tall white one - is rather iconic in downtown Los Angeles.

And talking about the microphone, there are all sorts of mistakes in P.R. During "Let's Go Crazy," when we see Morris in his bedroom, carrying and suit, then he suddenly turns around to see himself in the mirror and takes a step forward, there is a chubby crew guy in the background that ducks behind a wall.

That's one of many boo boos in a film that was shot on a shoestring budget. It happens.

Didn't know, I'll check. It reminds me the mistake in the "When Doves Cry" video: in the beginning, you see a crew member in the mirror (pulling the camera certainly).

When fitting the frame to the TV, it wasn't so much that it was showing you more at the top and bottom, as it was cutting off the sides.

In other words, you saw the same amount on top & bottom of the DVD as compared to the film, but you saw less on the sides.
