. Yes, the guitar sounds much better on the latest remaster. However, as a whole, I have a lot of issues with that release. My main gripe is that having access to the multitracks, they couldn't resist the temptation to mute individual tracks whenever they aren't playing – and this results in a constantly changing soundscape with different noise levels. Totally unnatural and it really annoys me. When Prince is playing his guitar, you get all the noise that is naturally part of a high-gain, distorted guitar, but as soon as he stops playing, all that noise is muted. So in my humble opinion they just missed a big opportunity to create a truly enjoyable live sound.
Well, that is very interesting...if it were that obvious, I think i'd have heard it. However, I'm going to go back and listen again. I have played Purple Rain off of that release 1000x I never heard that. Were you listening on ear buds??
. Just to avoid any misunderstandings: I was talking about the latest Syracuse live reissue, not SOTT. |

we may not agree on the drop outs but, I'll bet we can agree on Utrecht Can someone not add some damn audience to make that a more satisfying listen? Who mixed that? |

. It's not dropouts, I didn't say that. It's tracks getting muted whenever there is no playing on them, so the sound of the entire recording changes (to my ears: drastically) whenever P starts or stops playing his guitar, for example. Just listen to Let's Go Crazy. |

Utrecht - I love the way it is.
If I want to hear some "audience atmosphere" I can always play some gig recorded with a walkman at the back of a stadium.
Give me a dry soundboard recording anytime. As someone (like many of you I suppose) used to all kind of crappy audience recordings, I want my soundboards clean.
I dream of something like this from Dortmund'88 or Tokyo'90.

David Z. mixed it exactly how it sounded that night at the venue (as if we all live in that venue to hear this mix properly) would be nice if he mixed it for home listening.

Hi everyone, new member long time lurker, first post. I was on probation for the first five days so amidst the D&P SDE news I couldn't post anything. Can't remem6what I was gonna say?
I've been collecting Prince vinyl since Purple Rain was new, and Diamonds & Pearls vinyl has been my most searched internet search for like, the duration of the internet. There's never been a US pressing and the imports have always been too much $ for me.
So finally they announce a new pressing and the excitement overwhelms me, and what do I do? Plunk down like $70 that same day on an OG copy from Greece lol.
Anyway I will be buying the milky white marble as well and checking the calendar to see if it's Oct 27 yet. |

I do get what you're saying and I agree, don't want the audience to be too loud as I won't be able to hear the show and all the parts that make up the arrangements. The Detroit Masonic Temple show on the 1999 SDE was really good. The Syracuse show, really good. Utrecht sort of sounded dead despite it being a great show. Prince is so hyped during Beautiful Night but it's like no one is there..
You must know the Lovesexy Milan show from 1988/July....Utrecht reminds me of that soundboard show. It's awesome but, very little crowd. |

Kares - update. I have been in contact with someone who has not been happy with the sound on this Syracuse show. This person had a plan to rip the music off of the Blu Ray (better dynamic range) and remix it down to something much improved. This is a convo i've had with this person going back over a year. I actually thought he was just BS'ing me but, coincidentially, he contacted me this weekend and sent me his remix. I knew it was diff from the very start but, after a lot of A/B comparing, I'm floored by how much he improved the mix by. I'm sure he did a lot of tinkering but the main change is the reduction of crowd noise. With this reduction, you can hear the instruments much much more clearly. If you thought Brownmark's bass playing was incredible in Irresistable, you will be more impressed with how it sounds on this remix. Purple Rain is where I listended repeatedly....there is a lot of crowd noise and w/o it, everything is more clear....even the drums pound more.
Incredible. |

. It's possible of course to reduce the crowd noise and you can apply multiband compressors to make the bass and drums more punchy – I believe you it can sound a bit better. But this can't really address the problem I explained before: the presence of a high-gain guitar noise (which is natural), when P plays, and the sudden disappearence of it (unnatural) as soon as P stops playing. |

So, comparing the old DIamonds and Pearls track to the new leaked one....the new sounds muted. THe high hat sounds, def muted. I'm still assessing but, that's the most obvious observation thus far. |

as an fyi...just reducing the crowd noise greatly improved everything. The person that did it, took the blu ray audio, reduced the channels mainly dedicated to audience and the improvement is stellar. I actually won't ever listen to the official after this.... |

The OG vinyl of SOTT always sounded great but the CD was muddy. Just did another A/B comparison between OG vinyl and 2020 remaster and OG is either a tad bit louder or a tad punchier than the 2020. Both sound great. |
