Originals 2

Which 15 tracks would you like to see on a potential, if not inevitable, second edition of demos created for other artists? Here's my version. Assuming they're somewhere in the vault.

1. The Bird (The Time)

2. Cool (The Time)

3. Jerk Out (The Time)

4. Desire (The Family)

5. Mutiny (The Family)

6. A Love Bizzare (Sheila E.)

7. Sugar Walls (Sheena Easton)

8. Nasty Girl (Vanity 6)

9. Martika's Kitchen (Martika)

10. G-Spot (Jill Jones)

11. 101 (Sheena Easton)

12. Yo, Mister (Patti LaBelle)

13. With This Tear (Celine Dion)

14. Journey 2 the Center of Your Heart (Chaka Khan)

15. Elixer (Bria Valente)

Nice! Yeah there literally could be two more worthy volumes of 15 demos. Including "U" which he gave to Paula Abdul and 'The Voice' from the first album he produced for Mavis Staples. Also '777-9311' by The Time and 'Hollywood', which he wrote for one of the George Clinton albums he produced to help him out financially.

Good selection! I would only replace the last 3 songs with “I Don’t Wanna Leave You” (The Time), “I Don’t Wanna Stop” (Ren Woods) and “Drive Me Wild” (Vanity 6). I’m most intrigued by “I Don’t Wanna Stop” because it’s a Dirty Mind era recording and because it’s the only song that Prince recalled for whatever reason. Plus, it’s a b-boy classic!

For A Love Bizarre, are you thinking a Prince-only version? His vocals are already pretty front and center in the official version!

There was a mashup/remix of I Feel 4 U on the Musicology website (Reflection Room), where it mixed Prince's version with Chaka Khan's (including the guy's intro). I wouldn't mind seeing that released at some point.

Ooh, you just reminded me of 'U'. A great little tune that sounds way too good for a Paula Abdul album. I'm happy to wait and see what turns up, if anything!😎✌️🎸

It's why I kind of disagree with the premise of this thread that it's "inevitable." There's nothing to imply it's "potential" or "inevitable," more likely shelved/abandoned/merely a test and if that's the case they need to be putting this stuff on the SDEs orrrr orrr somewhere anyway.

Yeah.

Whatever the name or concept, just do something with the original Prince versions of the songs he gave to others.

Originals was ridiculously stupid, anachronistic, and disrespectful to the songs. Should never have been compiled and I'm glad the concept is over.

It was solid, but the tracks would be better served in a box set or as additional tracks on the SDEs.

Original estate figured they had a hit concept on their hands to reclaim them 1984 Purple Rain numbers, but unfortunately the only "original" 98% of the general audience cares about is "Nothing Compares 2 U" (ignoring the true "original" has been out since 1985).

Prince’s original version of “G-Spot” is fantastic.Much better than the Jill Jones version that came out later.

His versions generally got worse the more he worked on a song.

One of the lessons to learn from Prince's discog is to just get those songs down, finished, released, then move on to another thing asap.

yes. yes we do.

c'mon those carmen songs with Prince doing all her raps would be interesting at the very least, if not possibly/maybe good this time.

To that list, I'd add:

*My Drawers
*Wouldn't You Love To Love Me (1986 demo)
*The Dopamine Rush
*Flesh and Blood (I know Jill's version wasn't released, but still.)

Ah shit yes, forgot 'Wouldn't you Love 2 love Me' 86 thumbs up!

I thought this list was good because it only has the one-off (or sometime two) songs for artists on there album from the 80s.
I would love to see all the "protege" albums in full (The Time, Sheila E, The Family, Jill Jones etc.) and not on a Originals.

I'm with those that like the "Originals" concept rather than saving tracks for a SDE. I loved the first "Originals". It honors Prince to remind people how often he cut tracks for others.
