I have no problem with veganism, but he the way he expresses the message in this song is too preachy and sappy for my tastes.

As a vegan I have to respect what you're saying here. I mean I respect any vegan's attempts at persuasion but you have to refrain from anything that smells like self-righteousness.

p control

love the synths, the chorus is fun, i hate pretty much everything else. its just dumb overall. tries to go for a certain vibe (feminist, sexy, clever) but fails really. would only work if he gave it to carmen or mayte. but coming out of his mouth, its just ugh.

endorphin machine

pretty good riff, though not amazing, but the lyrics again, are dumb, and lazy, and like he knocked it out in 10 mins. thats the problem with the gold album in general, hes trying to get a 'just a band having fun in the studio' vibe, but he didnt bother writing good enough songs. sounds like a bad lenny kravitz outtake (and ive tried to get into live versions, which are a bit better, but only marginally)

now

just cringe and corny. trying to sound louche and laisez faire and cool, but failing, with a rowdy chorus that ramps up the corniness, cos rowdiness and prince do not mix. hes not a rowdy guy.

"Endorphinmachine" is one of the best songs he's ever written.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

its a decent lunkhead riff but it doesnt feel as exciting as it wants to be

the song itself has a good concept, but the fleshing out of it is poor, its like its hyping itself up to be something better than it actually is (which was the gold album as a whole really - that era is more interesting for what was happening around the music, than the music itself, which is good, but not really amazing)

prince has done way better hard rock tracks (Eg bambi, im yours, computer blue).

also, pretty much everything on C&D fulfills that brief better.

also (2), if you want 70s rock riffing, lenny does it better and with more clarity on circus and the 5 album. razz

1. All the midnights in the world : His voice doesn't sound right, the song is too cheesy.

2.Temptation : I just can't get into it, it gives me anxiety.

3.Take me with u : Sounds like something from a Grease movie

Honorable mention to Delirious, Everybody loves me.

yeah, it's like word painting.

That kind of breezy summer love.... you're not gonna be hooking up with Mariah Carey or prime Aretha Franklin there. The bad Appolonia vocals almost make it feel more "real" in the context of the song.

Maybe the line should have been,

"I don't care WHERE you go,

I don't care how bad you siiing

I DON'T CARE PRETTY BAY BAAYY"

The riff's lame, too.

His 90s guitar style might be my least fav. The era of grunge/alternative/anti-solos and he's quadrupling-down on the 70s/80s throwback riffage. He started featuring it more prominently in the mix and closer to his live guitar ferocity, but otherwise 90s Prince guitar was a huge step back from 80s Prince guitar. At least by the 00s he increased his Santana influence and made his playing seem remotely progressive/cool again...

i dont wanna compare it to nirvana cos theyre on opposite ends of the spectrum and there is 'good time' fun 70s rock too, ie not everyone has to be into black sabbath etc. prince is closer to a band like guns n roses than nirvana (though he was into NIN around this time weirdly, which i think you can hear on come, not TGE)

theres lots of TGE songs where the vibe is like 'im excited so you should be too' but he hasnt put in the effort to make you (or me at least) feel the same

at least on gold, or dolphin, he put effort into the songcraft. endorphin machine and interactive, fun as they are, just dont stack up for me, as the energy is there, but the songs are throwaway.

and rock n roll is dead rocks harder, way harder, than rock n roll is alive (and it lives in MPLS) while im at it.

Agreed on "Take Me with U" and "Manic Monday", although not on "Delirious", his only rockabilly song I truly stan without caveats is "Ronnie Talk to Russia".

good analysis. TGE tracks have energy/pep but little actual substance. Even the stuff I like, like I like "Rock & Roll Is Alive!" but it's probably based on energy level combining with energy level of the cool crowd noise loops. That song probably wouldn't translate well to Piano & Micrphone Tour format, for instance.

And I only bring up the anti-solos because on stuff like his extended guitar freakout on "777-9311" where his riffs get all atonal and dirgey--that would have totally worked even better in a 90s context. He definitely had it in him, but the guitar style gets more throwback/neo-classical in the 90s instead.

I dont think he was interested in indie or alt rock or grunge much, or what was happening on the fringes much, ie not into rock cool or edginess by then
And if he was (eg NIN) it wasnt seeping into the music he released (except loose maybe)
In the early to mid 90s he was more into showing off the band, musicianship, and as a result of that setup, sounding more traditional (comparatively)
A song like da bang i liked as it rocked pretty hard and noisily but theres not much of a song attached

  1. Free - As I've said elsewhere recently, this is one of Prince's most cloying and uninteresting ballads of the 80s. It sounds like a proto version of "God Bless The USA" or one of those other patriotic circlejerk tracks from that decade, and it brings the energy of the 1999 album to a screeching halt.

  2. The Ladder - I'm not a religious or spiritual person but I can absolutely respect a spiritual message so long as it's put to music that kicks ass. This is not one of those instances. Everything about this feels like a plodding Sunday School followup to "Purple Rain" but without even a fraction of the passion or electricity of that iconic ballad.

  3. Hot Thing - Coming from a different angle with this one. "Hot Thing" has plenty of spunk and energy, and in theory I should like it, but it just never connected with me. The way he drawls "Hot thaaang" irritates me, as do the shrill lead synth lines. Not the strongest of Prince's 86-87 funk jams.

Rave Un2 the joy fantastic - The sample on 200 balloons is better than the song it was taken from.

the only two I can think of that I really don't like are Graffiti Bridge and Purple and Gold

I actually love listening to bob George when in a bad mood

Its one of his most intense tracks

I like singing/speaking along with it

The lines are priceless

Prob his greatest script writing/dialogue right there

Co-sign. I put it on all the time. It's got more replay value than 50% of the 80s, and I love the 80s.

The beat is siq, the guitar is badass. It's a great song, not a one-off "novelty", though perhaps it has elements of both....

So many killer lines
And the emotion behind the lines makes me think prince should have done more voice over work (as a villain obv... in an altered voice)
Its prob the best song on the black album (and one of the weirdest things he ever did in a good way)
And one of the tightest... doesnt waste a second whereas a lot of the other tracks could do with some editing or an earlier fade at least

This is such a good thread! We all love P but I was howling with laughter reading some of this (the descriptions of WHY?) but also violently disagreeing with those who've listed some stone cold classics in the songs they dislike!

Slow Love; Baby I'm a Star??! (as in the encore mega-anthem from the Nude Tour no less) - it was one of the highlights of the live show that year (not to mention the '84 tour!!); Hot Thing; Do Me, Baby...the list goes on. And fair enough, because everyone is entitled to those views.

This is why we love Prince, so eclectic, and as a result always divides opinion (even amongst the hardcore!). However, given the amount of guff the man recorded...let's face it quantity can often mean lack of quality, here's my selected 3 (3 and a bit ;o). And pls do feel free to disagree!

1. The Lion of Judah - an horrific track on every level, from a very listenable, and slightly underrated album in my view...can't stand it and always skip. It really grates on my nerves, to the point of being unlistenable. Resolution is in fact a nice resolution where that set is concerned.

2. Graffiti Bridge - what an absolute honker this is...there's a reason you keep seeing this one popping up! Why oh why oh why...even Stevie Wonder's nadir - I Just Called To Say I Love You - wasn't as bad as this!! GB has amazing comedy value, I'll give it that, but only in an unintentional way...

...speaking of which before I name #3, I laughed at the comments on Everybody Loves Me. I'm prepared in advance for the brickbats on this one, but I like that song purely because it's a complete spoof and played for laughs. Tongue is placed very firmly in cheek (clearly), and it makes me laugh...bizarelly it also has a semi-funky ending!

3. I know this has been debated many times before, (and even though I enjoyed it musically, and live a great deal) I found parts of The Rainbow Children's lyrics really offensive. I just thought P was so off the mark there (his racial commentary). To me he came off sounding like a man who needed to get out more, have more life experience outside of his own hermetically sealed bubble. Claustrophobic and disappointing to me as a fan at the time, yes he was forgiven but I felt I'd never forget it (I haven't).

3b. Never nuts on P.Control/My Name Is Prince - these are both in the same category for me...songs where P was just simply trying too hard. Who was he trying to convince, himself/us? No need on either count. Yes you were funky, and yes you did have progressive views on women/sexuality, but I always felt these were some of the poorest expressions of both. Both grate and make me cringe quite a bit.

Yeah re: Bob George I am admittedly bias in favor of any time Prince used vocal effects. I think it's one of his great innovations/utilizations. Camille, Bob George, Darth Vader Rainbow Children. Luv it all.

also Rainbow Children lyrics > "Free" lyrics. At least they're somewhat interesting.
