Every bit of this album -- the music, the movie, his visuals -- resonates with me more than any other album ever has.

You have to work up to this album I think the white album is the beatles best but i wouldnt recommend it to a newbie Both white and sott are too big, too dense, and kind of climaxes to periods of productivity Sott is immense but its a pretty big feast Its also not as immediate as his other albums |

ehhh, was this how you got into Prince out the gate, though?
I always feel SOTT is like the worst intro to Prince that always gets recommended to new fans by virtue of being his best album.
It's the best because it's like the best approximation of his abilities in a big artistic statement, but those elements aren't really appreciated if you don't already have a baseline familiarity with the "Prince style", especially in the production department. Plus all the Camille, which can be polarizing (always loved it myself, just acknowledging).
Aye, you're probably right. My first introduction to Prince was hearing When Doves Cry, 1999, Little Red Corvette and Let's Go Crazy in 1984. I didn't commit to an album until Around the World in a Day a year later. I quickly picked up the previous albums and I've been on the purple train ever since! Funny, because your comments reminded me that Sign O The Times was so immense that I needed a couple of listens before I realised it for the masterpiece it is. I thought it sounded a bit minimalist on my first listen, as I recall. So your point is a good one 👍 😎✌️❤️
Yes! Exactly, "minimalist" was my exact same initial reaction at first. Not necessarily "boring" but "flatter" than other records?
Which is funny because now I find it quite layered and "dense" in arrangement. Not Lovesexy cluttered wall'o'dense, but not minimalist. [Edited 8/14/23 4:40am] |

White Album good comparison. Beatles fans probably bust into that one a little too early which somewhat tempers their assessment. It was my last Beatles album so I always loved it most out of their catalogue. |

Or SITKOL by stevie Indisputably an incredible album But its huge A first time listener, going into that, might find the epic track lengths a bit heavy going Sott is less indulgent tbh, but its still a lot to take in I dont think its flat but its got a slightly low key or deflated vibe to it Its not as outgoing or as enthusiastic as prince was on PR for example Maybe double or big epic albums are always bad introductions to an artist? The big epic works where they summarise their major themes and stretch out, you prob need some background to appreciate it, even if they have obvious standouts like sott does |
